WordPress fails to recognise that I am logged in

  • Unknown's avatar

Recently, in the last few weeks, I notice that if I access my site, whilst being signed in, my site does not recognise me.

If I then refersh the page, it will recognise that I am the site owner.

This happens on all platforms – PC, Android and iPad.

I have tried logging out and re-logging in, deleting cookies, no effect.

This is pretty annoying as it means I am recorded in my own stats.

Is this another ‘improvement’ (like removing the stats chart from the top of the page, or removing the justify text button from the WP editor), or something that is going to be fixed?

    Thanks

  • Hi –

Can you confirm which site this is happening on? It sounds like you might be signed in to a secondary user account.

The blog I need help with is eurasiaoverland.com.

  • Interesting…and this is happening across all different browsers (while visiting your site, not seeing yourself logged into your account until you refresh)? What browsers are you using on the PC and on your mobile devices when you visit your site?

I am logged into my site on two PCs (Windows 7 and Windows 10), and and Android phone.

If I am on a PC and am not recognised by my site (I see the ‘Follow’ tag at the bottom of the screen) I can click on ‘My Sites’ in the top left and my visit is not recorded in Stats. I can then click back and navigate my site as the owner.

On the phone, when I see the ‘Follow’ tab and go to ‘My Sites’, my visit is already recorded in my Stats.

This is getting rather frustrating as I can’t see what changed to cause it to stat happening back in, say May of this year. I’ve been running the same setup (2x PCs, Android) for at least 18 months.

    Thanks

    EO

  • Hi there,

Are all those devices sharing the same internet connection? I would suggest trying a different internet connection and see if that helps.

No, the two PCs are on completely different connections (home / work) and the phone switches between the two.

  • What browser(s) are you using on these three devices? Have you checked if it makes a difference to log in and view your site using a completely different browser?

Please clear your browser cookies on all three devices, and make sure that your browser on all three allows third party cookies. Then log back in.

If you’re using any browser add-ons that block online tracking, also disable those – note that some antivirus programs, like Avast, install their own browser add-ons that does this by default. If you have a browser add-on like that active, it could be blocking us from detecting that you’re already logged in.

OK, did all this, logged out of the two PC browsers, could not find a way on the Android App, deleted cookies, checked that the no-tracking option was disabled in Chrome… same problem.

  • Are you using any ad or tracker blocking extensions? If so, can you please check with them fully disabled, not just their options switched off?
