WordPress fails to save drafts for a long time now

WordPress used to save my drafts all the time. In fact, it was almost annoying especially with long posts because it was saving so often and every time there was a save, the post slowed to a crawl.

Well that’s over and done with. Now WordPress doesn’t save a damned thing unless I tell it to. I just wrote a 500 word essay and the browser crashed. WordPress only saved the first five words. Many times when I am writing, I see “Saving…” up above the post. Well it stays like that forever. Furthermore, there is no more Save Draft button like on the old interface. Even if you want to save something, it’s quite hard to do. How in God’s name are we supposed to save drafts now if the system won’t save and there’s no Save Draft button?

Is there any way to get back to the older interface. At least it had a Save Draft button.

I haven’t the faintest idea why WordPress broke so badly as far as saving goes, but it’s been broken here for a good year or so.

  • Hi there,

Many times when I am writing, I see “Saving…” up above the post. Well it stays like that forever.

If the “Saving” indicator doesn’t change to “Saved” it indicates that the editor is having trouble connecting to our servers. Have you checked whether clearing the browser cache and cookies and resetting your internet connection helps with that?

I checked the editor on your site and autosave worked fine for me, though. See the screen shots linked below.

How in God’s name are we supposed to save drafts now if the system won’t save and there’s no Save Draft button?

The Save Draft button is integrated with the autosave indicator – if autosave hasn’t run in a while the link will read “Save” and change to “Saving” and “Saved” if you click it.

If you prefer the WP-Admin editor you can still reach it via Post ->All Posts or Post ->Add Post in the WP-Admin dashboard for your site, here:

To avoid those problemes, you could first write your post in a simple texteditor and afterwards copy-paste it into the wordpress editor.

Thanks. Glad to see that the support, the Happiness Engineers, has moved over here to these forums after being on email. I was worried that support was gone altogether. I am very happy with this new support system!

That said, the autosave always fails for me in Chrome, so I switched to Opera. In Opera, it works very well. So for now, I am writing my posts in Opera.

Running multiple browsers at once is pretty cool. I usually run three different browsers at any given time.

  • If it always fails in Chrome, that means something in Chrome is preventing it from working.

Please make sure that JavaScript is enabled in Chrome:

Also try disabling any ad-blocker, privacy or anti-malware add-ons in Chrome – those sometimes work by just blocking all JavaScript on a site, whether the site needs it to work or not. If you can narrow it down to a specific extension, add WordPress.com as an exception in that extension so it doesn’t block our code any more.
