wordpress file (.wpress)

My files were sent to me and I downloaded them (200MB) with a name.wpress format. However when I upload, I get the message 413 status code for ‘POST /sites/274955/import/new and ‘Make sure you are using a valid WordPress export file in XML or Zip format. What am I missing?

  • Hi there,

A .wpress file is not a WordPress export file. WordPress exports are always generated as an .xml file, and only that format file can be imported using the WordPress importer.

.wpress is the format used by the All-In-One-Migration plugin for the open source WordPress software, and that file can only be uploaded to another WordPress site using that same plugin. Using that plugin on WordPress.com requires our Business Plan. But migrating a site in this way also causes problems on WordPress.com, as it overwrites files and database tables we create for your site that your site needs to properly function.

If you want to migrate an existing WordPress site to WordPress.com in its entirety, the better option is to use our own migration tool that’s available in the Business Plan:

    https://wordpress.com/support/import/

Alternatively you can do a normal WordPress export of only the content instead – log into WP-Admin, go to Tools ->Export, and export the content on your site. Then go to Tools ->Import here on WordPress.com, and import the .xml/.zip file you got from the WordPress export.
