WordPress Freezes on login
-
I work in a IT dept. at a high school. One of the teachers is trying to use WordPress for his class, but a lot of the students are having problems accessing wordpress, some on their laptops, some on the school computers. Any time they try to log on, it freezes.
This most likely seems browser related. Students are using microsoft Edge. We tested downloading Firefox on a Desktop computer, and that worked. Firefox however is not our standard for our school. The firefox method also didnt work for a student using a macbook. We also tried having them log in using an inPrivate window in Edge, that did not work. Any recommendations on browser settings so users can log in?
I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

Hi! Can you confirm whether the sites they’re logging into are hosted here on WordPress.com, or whether they are an installation of WordPress hosted locally or with another provider?
Also, it sounds like you’re fairly technical — have you noticed any errors, or anything in the JavaScript console with more details?

Apologies for the late replay
Unfortunately My coworker and I are not versed enough in Javascript enough to notice anything with that
As far as the sites they are using, it is wordpress.com itself they cannot get into

Ok, please make sure that Edge is up to date: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/microsoft-edge-update-settings-af8aaca2-1b69-4870-94fe-18822dbb7ef1
If it is, please do these two things:
1. Try clearing Edge’s cache and cookies: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/delete-and-manage-cookies-168dab11-0753-043d-7c16-ede5947fc64d
2. Try with all Edge extensions temporarily disabled: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/add-turn-off-or-remove-extensions-in-microsoft-edge-9c0ec68c-2fbc-2f2c-9ff0-bdc76f46b026
Please let us know how each step goes for you, and which version of Edge you’re using if you’re still having trouble.

We’ve tried inPrivate windows, so cache and cookies don’t seem to be the problem
We also don’t push any extensions on our Edge browsers on our computers. I could possibly check that later with students on laptops though.

Hm, that is odd.
Does the school run any network-wide content filtering system? If so, I suppose this could be a false-positive in that. It wouldn’t be the first time.
-
We did consider that, but as far as we can tell, there isn’t anything with the Firewall or any kind of content filtering that would block wordpress

You mentioned that it works in Firefox but not Edge. In this case, can you please visit https://www.whatsmybrowser.org/ in the affected browser(s) and share the URL next to the green button in your reply.
I’d just like to confirm that you’re referring to the Chromium version of Edge (currently version 98), and not Legacy Edge.
-
We are using the Chromium version of Edge (98), tests on some of the computers that were having the problem.

https://www.whatsmybrowser.org/b/WV154I also needed to make a correction from earlier, we do have OpenDNS for content filtering. Is there any kind of special URL that needs to be unblocked to make sure it works?

Thanks for getting back to me with those details. I’ll just need a few more to help troubleshoot this —
- How long has this been going on, and how consistently? Does the issue persist on the same devices but on another network (e.g. home)?
- Besides login, what parts of our service are unreachable? Please try visiting the following sites:
- Our support pages
- Other sites, such as https://techcrunch.com and https://uwpressblog.com/
- A
*.wordpress.comsite, such as https://wpbizseo.wordpress.com/ - The WordPress.com home page
- What is your Internet Service Provider and IP address? You can find your IP here: http://whatismyip.org/.
- Additionally, please run a traceroute as described here: https://wordpress.com/support/browser-issues/advanced-browser-troubleshooting/#traceroutes
I’d also like you to try logging in from this link instead: https://wordpress.com/wp-login.php?no_calypso
I look forward to hearing from you.

The teacher of that class sent me this reply after testing the links with his students:
“Here are 5 screenshots of the links you wanted us to try. We tried both the school computer and the student’s personal laptop. Both results are using Edge and were identical (school comp vs laptop on school wifi) and also resulted the same in chrome browser. Only Techcrunch loaded correctly which might be the key to solving this problem.”
As he said, the techcrunch link loaded without issue. The other links loaded improperly, usually with the logo at the top of the page, a then the links displayed in list format

Thanks for getting back to us. I have some questions:
1) I wasn’t able to see what’s in the screenshots; are you able to upload them or describe what you’re seeing?
2) Did you hear back on whether those sites can be loaded on a student laptop that is not on the school’s internet connection?
3) Are you and the teacher having any trouble accessing the sites, or is it just the students? If it’s just the students, that would point to another probable issue with some sort of configuration in your filtering.
4) Also, I don’t think you confirmed whether there is an error. If there is, can you send the error text? We can search to see if others have had any issues like this. Here’s how to see the console; just paste any error you see if one is there:

I think staff-sheva’s questions are all worth revisiting, too. A traceroute would help us confirm more details. And it does sound like you’d do well to check in with Cisco on this to see what rules they’d recommend.

Hello, apologies for no reply, we’ve been busy with other projects.
From what I can gather, the students can access the sites on their laptops outside of the school network
Me and the teacher have no issues getting on any of these sites
From what I’ve seen of the javascript, there is no errors within the login screen that a student was frozen on. A traceroute of one of the students also didnt seem to show any errors.
Will also try to contact OpenDNS for suggestions as well.

Thanks for the update. By the sounds of it, it’s likely a network issue causing this which would have to be investigated on your end with Cisco/OpenDNS.
