WordPress fuzzes up photos
-
I’ve posted on this before, but now I’ve got better evidence. I hope someone can solve this for me.
WordPress.com has been fuzzing up my photos. I know that it uses automatic compression, but I thought that was only for JPEG files. I want to show three examples of the same image. The first is a PNG file that I saved in iPhoto at 640 pixels across. The file size is 618 KB:
The second is a JPEG, also saved at 640 pixels, with a file size of 68 KB:
To my eye, they look identical. Finally, here is the same image on Facebook, directly uploaded from my phone. It’s in my public feed, so you should have no trouble accessing it:
The Facebook version is *noticeably* sharper than the two WordPress examples. What is going on?
Is there anything I can do to turn off the automatic compression? I assume I would have to buy the customization option and insert some code. Can it be done?
Or … is there decent-looking WordPress theme you can recommend that doesn’t use compression?
I am finding this very frustrating. Frankly, I’m losing interest in posting photos to my blog.
Thank you!

Here’s something to consider. Photo bloggers I know never ever post high quality high resolution images on their blogs. They provide a contact form for orders and once paid they send the high quality high resolution images to those who purchase them.

@timethief: I’m not a professional photographer. I’d be perfectly happy if I could have same resolution that I get on Facebook.

Oh, my. I’ve solved the problem. It’s not ideal, because it’s a bit of a pain. But when I embed the photo via Flickr, it’s perfectly sharp. In fact, if you go to my first example (above), you’ll see that it’s now a Flickr embed and looks great.
