WordPress has changed render size of photos in old posts

  • Unknown's avatar

Instead of showing these images at custom sizes set by me when I wrote the post, the photos are being shown at default standard sizes (e.g. thumbnail, medium, etc.).

This is deforming my posts, sometimes making them unreadable.

I do not know when this began but it seems pretty extensive. I can only fix this on an image-by-image basis using the following tedious procedure: Fore each image, edit the size, change to default, update photo, edit the size a second time, re-input original dimensions, update a second time.

Here is how the code changes. Here’s a malfunctioning image (it’s too big):

    [caption id="attachment_1232" align="alignleft" width="81" caption="Mass. Ave FDR"]<img class=”size-thumbnail wp-image-1232 ” title=”FDR cover” src=”http://wordonstreet.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/fdr-cover.jpg?w=116″ alt=”” width=”81″ height=”105″ />[/caption]

    [caption id="attachment_1232" align="alignleft" width="81"]<img class=” wp-image-1232 ” title=”FDR cover” alt=”” src=”http://wordonstreet.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/fdr-cover.jpg?w=116″ width=”81″ height=”105″ /> Mass. Ave FDR[/caption]

Here’s an image after the tedious procedure:

    [caption id="attachment_1232" align="alignleft" width="81"]<img class=” wp-image-1232 ” title=”FDR cover” alt=”” src=”http://wordonstreet.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/fdr-cover.jpg?w=116″ width=”81″ height=”105″ /> Mass. Ave FDR[/caption]

I can see what has changed but do not know what it means. It looks as though at some point WordPress changed how it was formatting photos, but did not grandfather in backwards compatibility. Specifically there is now an attribute of class “size-thumbnail wp-image-1232 ” that is overriding my user-specified dimensions.

I really should not have to go back and fix every single image in my blog, which goes back to 2009!

A few months ago we rewrote how image links work, and that has affected some users who manually modified their image links.

I’m not sure if your blog is one of the ones affected, so I’d like a little more information from you.

First of all, I’m a little confused by your links, as they all return the same post.

Could you perhaps post screenshots of where the images are malformed, or links to specific posts you have not yet modified?

Also, you may wish to post in a related thread for additional guidance:

Jackie, thank you, I appreciate your help. I’ll try to provide a little more information and some specific examples.

These are images I imported into my blog and formatted with custom dimensions, smaller than the default insert size (such as “medium”). They still appear appropriately sized in the editing page, but instead render at their default size (“medium”) when published.

As I said, the only fix I have found involves re-editing each image twice. When I do so, (1) the images retain their intended custom size when published AND (2) the underlying code changes in ways I do not understand.

I pasted examples of the code in my first post, so that you could see the differences. That is the code that WordPress generated when I added the image.

Part of that code is a URL of the underlying image that is on WordPress’s servers, and this forum rendered it a clickable hyperlink. The link is not an example of anything. I was just trying to show the CODE changes that coresponded to the problem.

Here are links to actual examples of this problem in action. The effect of this issue is not great in these examples but elsewhere has seriously deformed some of my blog posts.

    Here is an UNCORRECTED example:
    http://wordonstreet.wordpress.com/2011/01/28/when-four-lanes-are-two/

Here is a CORRECTED example that uses the same graphic:
    http://wordonstreet.wordpress.com/2010/12/22/design-report-partially-digested/

Note the size difference. They both look the same in edit mode.

I have read the thread you suggested pretty carefully (well, with an emphasis on the responses from Happiness Engineer Designsimply—it’s a long thread).

That thread deals with a bundle of issues of which one sounds a bit like mine.

However, Designsimply’s suggested fixes really do not work for me, as they either involve (1) a global operation to make all my photos the same size, which is not what I am after at all, or (2) an image-by-image fix. (2) is just too massive to contemplate.

What I’d like is for WordPress to fix things so that my custom image dimensions, which remain in the code, govern the size of the photo—as they did when I posted them.

I’m happy to provide screen shots if you like, but I think you might learn more from the links. Unfortunately this behavior seems fairly robust: I have observed it on several different browsers and platforms today! So you should have no problem reproducing the problem.

Thanks again for helping, I really do appreciate it. Please tell me what to try, or tell you about, next!

Thanks for the clarification and example links!

What’s happening is that a recent update made it so Settings > Media sizes now work on any images that have class names like “size-thumbnail,” “size-medium,” or “size-large” in the HTML. This allows for the images to resize gracefully if you change themes or want to change all of your image sizes at once.

One option to fix this would be for you to adjust the sizes in Settings > Media so the images always work at a set size for each one inserted as thumbnail, medium, large. That will affect all previous images as well as new ones you post later, so everything is consistent.

However, if you have previously customized the HTML code for your inserted images to all sorts of different sizes, I can fix things on our end to remove the size-{sizename} classes from all of your previously-inserted images. If I do that, please note that *all* previously inserted images will be disconnected from the Settings > Media settings and cannot be added back (unless you adjust them manually). While this may seem to be the easier option, I should warn you that there’s no undo, so if you later decide to change themes, your images would stay the same size in the new theme even if the new theme has a wider content area.

If you want me to go ahead and remove all of the size-{sizename} classes for you, please let me know you’d like to go ahead with that option.

When you add images in the future, the size-{sizename} classes will get added automatically, but if you adjust the per-image settings then they will go away. So everything should work fine when adding new images if you make sure the Settings > Media sizes are what you want or edit the image size through the visual editor.

I’m sorry the image resizing update has been a pain! I’m hoping to help you get it sorted out quickly.

One other point I should mention: if you do want me to fix your images, I’ll need to know which size classes you want removed (just size-thumbnail, for example, or all of them).

  • Unknown's avatar

Wow! Thank you, Jackie. I think removing the codes is my best option, and I am very grateful that WordPress can do that for me.

I do understand that locks me into my current theme, or at least one with the same column width.

I guess I locked myself into that when I started customizing image sizes in the first place. I don’t think my readers will mind.

So if you please, remove “size-thumbnail” and “size-medium” from my blog’s code, and thank you very much.

Can you let me know, at some point, when I should check to make sure this has happened?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have submitted the request to remove “size-thumbnail” and “size-medium” from all images in your blog. It may take a little while to process, depending on how many images are involved, but should be completed shortly.

If you don’t see the changes later today or tomorrow, please let me know.

Jackie, this seems to have worked exactly as you described. Thank you so much.

By the way, you and your happiness colleagues might be gratified, or at least amused, to know the following. I also have a foot in the world of Blogger and am active in Blogger’s help forum.

I love both platforms, but can only envy the access that WordPress users have, through people like you, to the WP engineers who can make fixes like this when something goes wrong. It’s great!

    Thanks again.

Thanks adam00auster! I’m glad everything is working properly now, and I appreciate the kind words. Have a great day.
