wordpress has my old domain name. How to get it back?

  • Unknown's avatar

    My son created http://www.coopermays.com in 1996 and gave it to me. It described my pottery business. I did not own a computer and did not support the site, so it was taken over by a software company, Antamedia in Serbia. They had the site to sell their software to galleries until last year, 2017. I had been in contact with them trying to recover the domain name, but they let it do last yer without me knowing and it now appears in wordpress,
    but has no information, only advertising word press. Can I get back the domain name? Who has it? WordPress? Or someone else?

    Hi,

    No, the domain is not owned by WordPress.com. That URL is redirected to the self-hosted website http://xm口座開設マイナンバー.xyz/. You may leave a message in a Leave a Reply box on the site.

    Hi there,

    I understand your confusion and I am adding some points that will clear your doubts.

    I checked the URL you mentioned and it appears that your website is hosted at “cocoaserver” which is a different from WordPress.com

    This means that your website is not located at the servers of WordPress.com

    This forum is for supporting websites hosted at WordPress.com.

    Here is the link to check the basic difference between WordPress.com and self hosted WordPress sites.

    Pointers for your issue:

    1. You would need to contact your hosting provide “cocoaserver”. Ask them the details regarding your website domain and othe details. (As to if the domain is with them or not)

    2. Check your email history for any of the transactions related to your website (hosting or domain). The server company might ask you the details to verify your claim. The support team there will guide you in accessing the site as an admin.

    3. In a basic check, your domain name is register with GoDaddy.

    4. You can raise a question at the WordPress.org support. https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

    Hoping that the above information will help you finding a solution.

    Regards
    Deb

    @drpapul,

    User coopermays does not own the domain http://www.coopermays.com, or the self-hosted website associated with that domain. The owners of the pottery business website evidently let the domain expire and it was acquired by someone else. See the following:

    I did not own a computer and did not support the site, so it was taken over by a software company, Antamedia in Serbia. They had the site to sell their software to galleries until last year, 2017.

    Hi there,

    Thank your for your inputs. On a basic check, the DNS and the name servers are located at “cocoaserver”.

    Regarding the domain you are right. I have also not mentioned that the user owns the domain. The primary check shows that the domain in registered with Go Daddy.

    However, to prove the ownershipof the domain, the user would need to provide the owner ship proof like transaction details and email history of that. Unless that proof is given, ownership of the domain cannot be confirmed.

    In order to log in to the admin of the site, the user would need to contact the host provider with the associated details. The hosting provide will then support the user to access the admin area. (After verifying the ownership or purchase proof).

    Since, the user mentioned that the site was taken over by another venture, they can provide th required details to the user regarding the transfer.

    Hi Deb,

    I have also not mentioned that the user owns the domain.

    In your first post here you said, “it appears that your website is hosted at “cocoaserver,”” and

    You would need to contact your hosting provide “cocoaserver”. Ask them the details regarding your website domain and othe details. (As to if the domain is with them or not)

    The domain has evidently passed through at least two owners since @coopermays owned it, evidently some years ago. So it’s not clear to me how knowing the present hosting provider, DNS, or nameservers will be of any help to @coopermays.

    Would the domain registrar provide information, or act as a liaison between him and the present owner of the domain? I wouldn’t think so, but don’t know. Contacting the owner of the site directly via the site seemed like the best advice to me, so that’s what I suggest. As for other potential means of seeking to obtain the domain, I’m out of my realm. That’s why I added the “modlook” tag after my first post.

    Again, you said “your website,” your hosting,” and
    “your domain name.” It isn’t his or her website, hosting provider, or domain name.

    Hi

    @musicdoc1

    Would the domain registrar provide information, or act as a liaison between him and the present owner of the domain? I wouldn’t think so, but don’t know.

    In the case of any official transfer of the domain, the current registrar may provide the details.

    In regards to access to site admin section, only hosting provider can assist the user with that after verifying the proof of ownership.

    I meant “your” in the context that for any changes that user wants to do by accessing the admin section, the hosting can help her in doing so after verifying the details.

    In the absence of any trail or details, I am not sure how the credentials can be verified to allow any access to the site admin.

    Yes, modlook is preferable. An official WordPress.com Support staff would be able to ascertain regarding the user account and site status at WordPress.com

    Deb

  • Hi there,

    The domain, coopermays.com, has never been registered with WordPress.com nor connected to any WordPress.com account or site, so we cannot give you any help with this domain here.

    Please contact GoDaddy, where that domain has been registered since 2003, or contact the current owners of the domain directly for help with this.

    @drpapul
    , while we’re glad to have you in the forums and while you’re certainly welcome to help, please also realise that many of our volunteers, like @musicdoc1, has been doing this for years and generally know what they’re talking about. Rather try to learn from the experienced volunteers than tailgating them, trying to improve on their replies, and then derailing a user’s thread by arguing with another volunteer on what the correct answer is.

    If you get to a thread and see another volunteer has already replied and modlooked the thread, please leave it for staff to handle from there, as further replies on the thread just means we take longer to get to it.

    @kokkieh,

    Thank you. : – )

    User @coopermays is not asking for access to a site’s admin section. Is not an owner of the site and not trying to prove ownership. Has nothing to do with the site presently. Instead @coopermays is inquiring as to how to go about obtaining the domain again.

    @drpapul,

    You’re gonna be fine. I’ve no doubt that you will do some great work here, and may have already done so. But it might be a good idea to slow down just a little for now. Words to the wise. : -)
