WordPress hosting -HELP

  • Unknown's avatar

I bought a domain via google – the $15.00 deal but I’m a little confused. Do I need my own hosting (I have hosting) but I’m thinking they auto host it when you buy this package?

How long does it take for them to set up the hosting so I can get started on some stuff?

Any links to good info on this will be appreciated – did searches and didn’t turn up very much that was clear or helpful.

WordPress – you need better FAQs, The times I have looked through them here, they have not been very helpful/thorough.

….also do I have to change anything in the domain manager (via Automattic which I guess they use when you purchase from them) as far as the hosting is concerned or is it all done automatically (if so, how long does it take?)

I have no idea what Google is offering, so I can’t help you with that.

You may want to start reading with the sticky thread at the top of the forum called “WordPress.com vs WordPress.org”.

WordPress.com or WordPress.org? What is the URL of your blog, starting with http?

(Forum is not behaving well; it must be Friday!)

(apparently every time I clicked refresh, it reposted my comment! WordPress forum prob, sorry about the duplicates)

    http://www.imconnections.com

(I believe wordpress.com? Logged into wordpress.com and created the blog, then clicked “domains” add domain, and bought the domain w/the mapping – the $15.00 deal).

It then directed me to “manage my domains” at Automattic. I set the password, etc. and I see that the name servers are set up but I’m totally lost as to if they are hosting it or if I need to use my own hosting. I thought the package I bought meant they were hosting it?

Yep, it SOUNDS like WP.com but it looks like you have an independently-hosted blog, because I can’t see my admin bar when I look at it. Thanks for the URL.

I think what may have happened is, you’ve got a WP.com ID and an independent blog as well, and you bought an upgrade you might not need. Contact staff on Monday and ask for some clarification, because it sounds to me like you bought the domain name through WP.com but mapped it to your independent blog. I mean, it’s still cheap, but not as cheap as it could be. Staff would need to unravel things if that’s the case.

Thank you for your reply =) You’re the only one that has tried to be of any help and it is appreciated.

I got it worked out but I’m still not 100% on what I did or didn’t need. I actually bought the domain through wordpress.com; bought the domain mapping; dl’ed wordpress.org and pointed the domains to my own hosting (through godaddy). (have a little more understanding of wht the heck I did since after I posted for help (and I’m really impatient) I went ahead and called godaddy and asked for some help.

So maybe that explains a little better?

I wasn’t sure if I actually had to use my own hosting or if the purchase of the domain and domain mapping gave me hosting through wordpress or not? Couldn’ t wait any longer to find out because I wanted to get to the designing aspect so I could get to blogging!
