Whenever I try to comment on someone’s blog using my WordPress username, it won’t allow it and keeps saying ‘you do not own that ID.’

I don’t know what it means or why it won’t let me.

I don’t have a blog of my own, just a WordPress account that I created ages ago.

In reference to Blogger the issue is on the other end. Blogspot software assumes we all have a single username here at wordpress.com and only a single blog by the exact same matching name. It will not accept any other URL – invalid URL! it says. Ha!

So if we have a domain or more than one blog registered under the same WordPress.com username trying to comment becomes impossible, unless the blogger chooses to enable commenters to post with a username and URL on their Blogger blog.

The only workaround is to register a Blogger blog which will allow you to comment but your username will not be linked to your WordPress.com blog when you do. Then you are labeled as a ‘no reply blogger’. It’s crazy-making!

Open ID has always failed more often than it has worked.

Bottom line: This is a well known issue. If you simply use the Name/URL option when it’s provided then your blog will be linked to your username on the comments you leave on blogspot blogs.

Hello, I don’t have any blogs at all, just a WordPress.com account, which I don’t even use, but you cannot delete a WordPress account apparently!

The only option to comment on the blog I wanted to was via Open ID, which won’t let me – grr.

    Here’s where I wanted to comment –

I’m not great with technical stuff so didn’t really understand your explanation, but thanks for trying to help :)

Thanks for the URL. that’s not a WordPress>COM blog and we cannot help with it here at all.

Okay. I can’t comment on any blogs – not just this one, so there’s some problem somewhere.

Why can I not cancel my WordPress account? I rarely use it, so would like to be removed.

Although username accounts are not deleted, so you cannot be impersonated and have your reputation affected by anyone registering the same username in the future, there are steps you can take that amount to removing all personal information and result in leaving only a throwaway email address behind. http://en.support.wordpress.com/deleting-accounts/

    1. You can go to My Account->Edit Profile and remove all data except the account name and an email address. Create a throwaway email address and change the account email to that throwaway address. This only leaves the username behind.

    2. To unsubscribe from email sent to you from WordPress.com, go here and click on “Block all subscription emails from WordPress.com”:
    http://wordpress.com/#!/following/subsettings/

    3. To ensure the account is locked up tightly, visit this site, generate a password of 15-20 characters, and change the account password to it:
    http://www.thebitmill.com/tools/password.html

    4. While you cannot completely delete your Gravatar profile, you can remove all of your profile information easily through the “Edit My Profile” page here:
    http://en.gravatar.com/profiles/edit/?noclose#about-you

You can also hide your Gravatar profile from external access. Visit your profile page (click your name in the top navigation of the website), then click the “Hide My Profile” link in the bottom, right-hand corner.
