WordPress Image Handling
-
Can someone explain WordPress image handling or at least point me to some descriptive documentation (not just how to insert an image). If I add a post from the Reader (Text) and insert an image which I load from my PC, the image appears as “Unattached” in the Media Library. If I add a post from the Dashboard and use “Add Media” then Upload an image from my PC, the image appears as “Attached” to the post. Now if I delete both the images from the Media Library, the images are still displayed in the posts. My question: “Is the image saved somewhere else or does it become embedded in the post?”
Another thing, some of the older posts no longer have their images displayed. I suppose at some point those images were deleted from the Media Library, but why aren’t they still displayed in the posts as the examples above?

When you delete an image from the Media Library it is also deleted from the Post / Page. HOWEVER – images are cached on WordPress.COM to speed up page loading, it can take up to about three days for an image to be cleared from the cache. You seeing the cached image in your Post. After about three days when your image is cleared from the cache you will no longer see the image in the Post.
The delay while the cache clears can be a bit confusing. The older Posts you no longer see images in are because the image has finally been cleared from the cache.
WordPress.COM is hosted on three massive server farms in three physically dispersed locations to keep your blog working in case of some sort of disaster.

Thank you for that info. Now it makes sense. I have scoured the internet looking for that explanation and never saw image cashing discussed. So, the image has to remain in the Media Library in order to always be available to the post it is associated with. Correct?
Can you explain the why the image uploaded into the post from the Reader is not “Attached” to that post?
Thanks again for your response.

You be welcome
If you upload a picture directly into the Media Library it will not be attached to a Post if you later insert the picture into a Post if my memory is correct. But there is an option in the Media Library to attach a picture to a Post / Page
