WordPress import 'processing' but no upload

  Trying to import some posts from a self-hosted WordPress to a .com. When I select ‘wordpress’ in the Tools>Import, I get the ‘Processing…’ message immediately. It does not give me the chance to actually upload the XML file. Obviously it can’t be importing if I didn’t upload anything. What’s going on?

  It’s Monday and it’s prime time business hours in North America, so everyone is expecting the importer to perform and it can’t cope is my guess, but I could be wrong.
