WordPress in other countries
-
We are leaving for an extended European vacation. I wanted to make sure that WordPress is supported in: Ireland, England, Italy, Greece and Turkey. (When we were in Russia, I was able to blog using a special e-mail address, but did not know if I would need to do that in the above-mentioned countries.) Thanks, Ginny Barrett
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There are bloggers using WordPress.com in Ireland, England, Italy, Greece, and Turkey. But there are also bloggers in Russia using this platform. I’m not sure why (or how you found out about) using a special email address when you visited Russia?

@Tess
is this relevant? https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/my-blog-was-blocked?replies=50 -
WordPress told me (after my going to Russia and having problems) that one can request a special e-mail address to use (I know you need it in Russia and China, since both countries “block” wordpress.com). I requested such an email address from WordPress, and have tried it. You simply send a composed e-mail with photos or whatever to the created email address and VOILA, it is linked to your wordpress blogsite immediately! [You cannot edit or make comments to the blog while in those countries, but you can post an entry in the way I mentioned.]

Interesting. But how would one find out in advance of visiting, say, Turkey, if such access is blocked?

The reason I am writing this is to find out IF Turkey does block wordpress.com. I have a dear friend who lives in China and she cannot access my blogsite. China “blocks” wordpress.com….and Russia did last summer…

Yes, 1Tess, that “post-by-email” is the info I used and I do have a special email address to post to, if necessary. I hope it’s not necessary in Turkey…but at least I am prepared…

Yes. That was what I wondered. My daughter has a Turkish friend and I could find out from her tomorrow. But perhaps staff would know before you leave so I’ll modlook this thread.

Hi there,
The “special” email address you used to post to WordPress.com is indeed our Post By Email feature, and should work from anywhere that you have access to sending email.
You should also be able to use WordPress in Turkey. If you run into issues, you can try using a proxy or VPN. This is an older article but may be useful: http://www.saigonist.com/content/bypass-vietnams-block-facebook-or-chinas-block-youtube

I thank you, Jackiedana, but the proxy/VPN stuff is way too confusing for little ol’ me!
