WordPress Incompatible with Windows 10?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I am running into an issue with WordPress not working properly on all of the browsers I’ve tried–Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Opera.

I am running Windows 10, and am running into issues with WordPress menus loading extremely slow and with the customization of sites. I can’t change my theme or customize it or create any blog posts. Much of the blog editing tools do not work–I press the button and it doesn’t react as it’s supposed to.

Could this be a Windows 10 incompatibility with the site as I am having the same issues across different browsers?

  • Hi there. Can you please provide your blog’s URL?

The operating system should not impact how a specific website works. Websites are written for browsers, not operating systems, and WordPress.com is supposed to work in all the major browsers. It might be that the browsers themselves aren’t compatible with Windows 10, in which case you’ll need to wait for a browser update, but I’ve been trying to keep up with the news on Windows 10 and haven’t heard anything about it not playing nicely with the major browsers.

Please provide your site’s URL so we can check if the problem isn’t perhaps there.

Try clearing your browser cache and cookies if you haven’t done that yet since the upgrade: http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/

You might also try re-installing your browsers, in case a file or registry entry got corrupted during the upgrade to Windows 10. I’ve heard of that happening in a few cases where people upgraded rather than doing a clean install.

The previous website, I deleted but–in an attempt to restart the blog–I started fresh: https://authormadelainebauman.wordpress.com

Cookies and cache were all deleted and there was no change.

When I tried to customize this website, in the Customizer (using INternet Explorer, Chrome or Opera) the various Customizer buttons lit up but did not react when clicked. The speed was also lacking when trying to load the Customizer itself. I had better luck, however, loading it on Chrome and Opera, rather then IE.
But the same non-responsive buttons were in all three browsers, preventing me from any customization on this site.

I noticed when visiting other sites, like Facebook or Twitter, that any changes I make are immediate and the speed is also faster. So I don’t know how or why WordPress would be much slower or unresponsive

  • Can you please let us know exactly which versions of IE, Chrome and Opera you’re using (use this link to get that info: https://www.whatismybrowser.com/), and also what type of device, i.e. PC, Mac, tablet, etc.

Meanwhile I’ll also tag this for staff in case they have more suggestions on this. Please be patient while waiting for them to answer.

    Thank you for your responses.

The file versions I’m using for the browsers are

    Internet Explorer: 11
    Opera: 31
    Chrome: 44

All browsers are up to date.

For the device, I’m using a PC.

  • Hi @madelainebauman, I’m trying to install a Windows 10 machine myself now. I do know we’ve had folks testing though without too many problems.

Can you upload a few screenshots of what you’re seeing?

Not seeing anything too different from normal use. I could describe it though, I had it working once, but I keep running into problems. The Customizer buttons light up a turquoise blue like normal, but when I click them…they don’t give me any options to change the site. The screen doesn’t freeze and go grey, the buttons don’t respond to me clicking them.

  • Just letting you know we haven’t forgotten, I’m just having a really hard time getting Edge on my system.

Can you press F12 while you’re experiencing trouble to see if any errors appear in the console?

Similar to this, I’m seeing problems with WordPress admin menus in Chrome. E.g. like this: http://snag.gy/DaAgd.jpg

I’ve had this issue on multiple WordPress sites. All on Chrome, Windows 10. Workaround is to resize the browser window on every page load.

  • @aaceuk
Can you please click on this link and let us know exactly which version of Chrome you’re using, just in case it’s a new Chrome version causing this rather than Windows: https://www.whatismybrowser.com/

Have you tried clearing the cache to see if that makes any difference?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi @kokkieh, thanks for the reply. The browser version is 45.0.2454.85 – more info at https://aboutmybrowser.com/Vl3H2tVd

I’ve just tried clearing the cache, have also tried a reboot to rule out a temporary glitch, still the same issue

    Thanks

  • @aaceuk is Chrome having similar issues with other websites too?

    @aaceuk
Are you referring to this site https://aaceuk.wordpress.com/ that has not had any published content since 2011? Or are you experiencing this on another site? If so what is the site URL please?

  • Unknown's avatar

@supernovia No I haven’t seen any other problems at all. Only with the WordPress admin menus.

@timethief No not that. All my WordPress sites (self-hosted) are experiencing the issue. One is provenweb.co.uk – but you can’t see anything from the URL as the problem is only in the admin, not on the front end.

  • @aaceuk
If this problem is on a self-hosted site, you need to ask in the WordPress.org forums, as we can only help with WordPress.com sites in this forum.

I should have noticed your screenshot is for a self-hosted site. My mistake.

@kokkieh Ah OK sorry, I came via a Google search and as the title of the topic was appropriate I didn’t spot that this was the forum for the .com version. Thanks anyway!

  • No problem. Hope they can help you fix it.

@supernovia-Sorry for kinda hijacking this, but since you closed my thread about Edge, could you please add a “Windows 10” tag to it? TIA :)

  • You’ve got it, @justjennifer :)

@madelainebauman – we’ve had several testers running Windows 10 without trouble here. Once I can get Windows 10 installed myself (trying each day!) I’ll try logging in as you to see if I can duplicate the problem.

But in the meantime, would you be able to confirm that:

    1) The problem still happens in Windows 10
    2) You don’t see this issue on another, non-Windows 10 computer?

Also, can you tell me more about your hardware?
