WordPress is over-compressing my images

    Hi,

I’m using WP as an online portfolio. My work is visually based and needs to retain visual quality. I’m using the TwentyTwenty template. I’m finding that WP is compressing my images to an absurd degree, shrinking them to sizes smaller than 400px in a given dimension. As a result, all of my image detail is lost and my website looks like a bunch of thumbnails.

    What I’ve tried:
-Adding a custom filter to the functions.php document
-Pre-compressing my images to less than 1Mb
-Re-linking the image to a specific image file by editing the image’s code
-Uploading png format instead of jpg
-Using ‘cover’ blocks instead of ‘image’ blocks

None of these are working. I don’t understand how other people are able to create websites that require higher quality images with this kind of forced compression. Any help would be appreciated.

    i dont see anything wrong

  • Hi there,

The site michaelafontana.com appears to be a self-hosted WordPress (also called “.org”) site hosted on BlueHost Web Hosting, and not a site hosted on our WordPress.com service.

    You can confirm here: https://gwhois.org/michaelafontana.com+dns

To clarify, we are not the only providers of WordPress sites, and other hosting companies also happen to offer WordPress sites, but they use a different version of the platform than what we use here. Because of this we are not able to help with your issue as it lies outside of our system. See http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ for more info.

You can find support for your self-hosted WordPress site here: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

You may also wish to contact your host’s support team for more assistance.

Hope that points you in the right direction!

I’ve contacted BlueHost and they told me they cannot find any issues on their end. My website is running on the current version of WordPress. Is there really no other help I can receive on this issue from the WordPress forums? No one else has encountered this issue before?

  • That is a self-hosted WordPress.org site, which we really can’t help with here.

To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

WordPress.org has complete documentation for self-hosted/installed versions of WordPress.org at https://wordpress.org/support/ and support at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/
