WordPress is taking an age to load
-
I’ve been having this problem since before Christmas and it is getting progressively worse. I’m having to use several attempts each time I want to use WordPress to get on the site. The editor takes for ever to load or I have to keep trying until it does load. On my own site when I go on it the pictures which are less than 1mb in file size aren’t downloading unless I click on refresh. It isn’t my internet connection, I have no problems at all with any other site or with streaming even. It isn’t the browsers, I’ve tried them all. It isn’t the computers, I’ve tried them all. In fact I’ve bought a new computer with Windows 11 on it, totally brand new so no need to clear cache or anything like that, and it still doesn’t work!!
It’s frustrating, its taking me twice as long to do anything at all on wordpress. I personally suspect that because I have a free account, when the servers are busy they’re prioritising the paid users and pushing the free accounts to the back of the queue. WordPress is becoming almost unusable. I’m at the stage now where I’m looking elsewhere for somewhere to put my blog but it’s annoying because I’ve posted regularly here for the past 5 years.
WP.com: Yes
Jetpack: No
Correct account: YesThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Even the links provided for help by the AI response to my question took for ever to load. The link I received to see my post one here took for ever to load. I don’t understand how just one website (wordpress) that I’ve been using since 2008 can suddenly decide it can no longer load any of its pages without me having to refresh or try again. I don’t have this problem with any other website on the whole of the WWW. As per one suggestion, I’ve just tried it on a mobile phone using the phone data instead of wi-fi and it did load the editor page reasonably quickly, though I did notice that even though I could see everything looking the way it should, the bar across the top that tells you a page is still loading never went all the way across. Please help, this is so sad, this is my book blog that I’ve been posting to for over five years, it would be so sad to have to start all over again somewhere else.

I haven’t noticed any problems such as you have described on my own free sites.
I did take a look at your site and the pages load quite fast for me, I didn’t notice any problems with media load times.
Do you experience similar issues when using the Reader to view other people’s blogs, or are the problems specific to editing your own site?

It is the whole wordpress site. I’ve just tried it this morning. On my chromebook using a browser it took a good few minutes for the “My Home” hub for posting, editing etc to show up (it goes to a blank page while loading) While waiting for that to load I used my tablet using the Jetpack app to access this page. The page loaded to readable almost instantly but the page obviously wasn’t completely loaded as there was a green ‘loading circle’ scrolling round for a while before it went away.
I’ve just been trying out the reader and tried to find those with the free site using a browser on my Chromebook. They load everything but tend to keep scrolling as if not properly loaded for a while. All I can do is hope it rights itself at some point this year. Last year the problem was typing in the editor which was whole sentences behind my typing, (I would sit and watch it catch up) 🤨 that seems to have gone completely back to normal now. It takes that long to get on the WordPress site that I’ve forgotten what I wanted to do half the time. So frustrating.

Those problems are most of the time caused by a bottleneck somewhere along your connection.
To find that bottleneck, perform a traceroute from your computer (not through an online service) to your site.

Thanks for helping. First I had to google what a traceroute is. I’ve read through it all and my understanding is first, I’d struggle to interpret the findings and even if I could, what can I do about it? I’m now of the opinion life’s too short, this has taken up huge swathes of time already and I’ll just have to put up with it or find a new home for my blog. After reading about it though, I would agree with you and think that does sound like the cause of the problems I’m having.

A further update. I tried the wordpress site in the library this afternoon, to check its not my internet that is causing the problem. At first it all seemed OK, and all loaded without problems. I then opened an already prepared draft post. On opening it had a completely black background! With dark grey text in the editor on a black background it was obviously impossible to see. This is a completely new one on me, I’ve never seen a black background in the editor and back at home it’s quite normal and white. So not just my home connection then. Incidentally I can’t even log into wordpress using the Firefox browser. I already had this problem at home but it won’t log in in the library either. Not really a problem because I don’t use Firefox much any more but even so, impossible to log in. Tomorrow I’ll try it at my daughters house where she’s just had FTTP (full fibre broadband) installed with super fast download speeds.
