WordPress issues

how come I can’t use custom colours using the Paragraph block on both my free WordPress blog on your service and my self-hosted WordPress blog? Unable to do so on 6 different browser across two different laptops for both the WordPress.com and WordPress.org blogs. The problems started with the latest update.

There are also other issues with the WordPress.org blog caused by the same update that don’t go away in debugging mode or when creating a brand new and completely clean subdomain using all the defaults, so it’s the WordPress dashboard interface that’s causing the problems on both WordPress.org and WordPress.com blogs

  • Hi there,

The site unwantedlife.me appears to be a self-hosted WordPress (also called “.org”) site hosted on IONOS Web Hosting, and not a site hosted on our WordPress.com service.

    You can confirm here: https://gwhois.org/unwantedlife.me+dns

To clarify, we are not the only providers of WordPress sites, and IONOS also happens to offer WordPress sites, but they use a different version of the WordPress platform than what we use here. Because of this we are not able to help with your issue as it lies outside of our system. See http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ for more info.

You can find support for your self-hosted WordPress site here: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

You may also wish to contact your host’s support team for more assistance.

Hope that points you in the right direction!

    Hi,

As I said, I have both a self hosted blog and a free blog on WordPress.com.

Both blogs have the same issue, I’ve tried the forum for my self hosted blog but they’ve ran out of ideas, so now I’m trying this forum for my free blog on WordPress.com, because it has the exact same issue

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m having this issue with my Paragraph block and I am on your free blog service provided by WordPress.com

  • Hi @ecksunwanted,

What’s your WordPress.com blog address so I can have a look? I don’t see one on the account you’re contacting us from.

    @tokenartgallery
, as you can see from the screenshot below. Custom colors are available for both the text and the background.

Is the Custom color link not working for you?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

That’s just a broken image link that takes me to “page not found” page.

When you write text, highlight it, go to change colour, select custom colour, then go to move the sliding bar, it won’t slide and picks the colour the bar starts on. I have a video of this issue and gave it to your WordPress.com Twitter team, but they just ignored me. But you can see the video from my Google Drive link below

    Hi,

Here’s my videos that show all the problems that your update caused, which includes the same custom colour problem that’s affecting blogs on WordPress.com and not just self-hosted WordPress blogs. A problem that existed on newly created subdomain’s with default theme and no plugins

    https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=1COk9zIJEwWeQtLX-ZgIBQ5oyWQgtkFL2

  • Hello there,

Many thanks for providing the videos, it’s been most useful in triaging this issue.

Just to check, are we speaking to the same person here: ( ecksunwanted (using self-hosted WordPress) / tokenartgallery (using WordPress.com) ?

It does look like this is an issue that I’ve been able to replicate.

For WordPress.com, I’ve reported this here: https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/issues/51747 and for self-hosted Gutenberg I’ve reported this here: https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/30561

The user experience certainly is confusing, so hopefully this will see attention soon. In the meantime, as a workaround – it looks like the colour spectrum bar is capable of picking colour regions, if you click at a required point, rather than sliding.

I hope this helps to offer clarification here.

    Hi,

Both blogs are mine and I wasn’t able to pick a region of colour with either blog. The default colour you start with when you click custom colour is blue which makes it difficult to select the specific shade of red I’ve used for the last 2+ years.

However, the main reason for the complaint is that the other issues with my self-hosted are also present on my WordPress.com blog, but because I can’t install plugins on that one I can’t test the others issues there. But the fact that the custom colour issue existed gave me a way to get the WordPress.com team involved to help, because my host and WordPress.org forums couldn’t help.

So does the issue with the plugin menu’s in the side bar not responding when you click them when creating and editing a posts also exist on WordPress.com blogs as well?

  • Both blogs are mine and I wasn’t able to pick a region of colour with either blog.

While we wait for the fix and, since it seems that you know the exact color you want to use, I recommend adding the color code instead:

does the issue with the plugin menu’s in the side bar not responding when you click them when creating and editing a posts also exist on WordPress.com blogs as well?

We have not seen any reports of this and, doing a quick test on my site, I also don’t see the issue.
If you don’t find help on the WordPress.org community forums, you can consider opening a GH issue directly. We don’t have access to the backend of self-hosted sites, so we are really not able to help you with this.

    Hi,

How do I list the issues caused by the recent WordPress update on GitHub?

  • Hello there,

If the issue is related to a block, the best place to put these would be here: https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/

    I hope this helps.

  • Unknown's avatar

Only one of the issues is related to a block, the others are with WordPress’s sidebar menu when creating or editing posts.

Oh, and how my featured image disappears at random when you save draft or schedule a post. That had been fixed by the pervious WordPress update, but the latest one brought that issue back

  • Unknown's avatar

the others are with WordPress’s sidebar menu when creating or editing posts.

Can you give us some more details about that? We’ve recently made changes to the navigation and it’s possible that what you’re looking for still exists, just not where you expect it to be.

Do you know how far back it used to be a problem and had you previously reported this problem to us? When we update WordPress it shouldn’t impact the editor behavior, so the more information you can provide the better able we’ll be to look into this. If you have the URL of that post, that would be helpful too.

    Thanks!

The menu’s are still there in there sidebar they just don’t responded to being clicked so you can access the options they have. This issue is in the videos I shared with you.

The problem started more than a year ago, I tried getting support with it through the WordPress.org forum and from WordPress Beginner (@wpbeginner https://twitter.com/wpbeginner) but nothing worked so I just learnt to live with the issue and had to use the WordPress app to check my scheduled posts still had there featured images attached to them

  • Do you also have those issues on your WordPress.com site? I’m not able to reproduce them here as described.

To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two entirely different entities: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

There are at times major custom code differences between the two.

If your WordPress.com site does not have this issue, I recommend continuing with WordPress.org’s support on that.

    Hi,

I know WordPress.com and WordPress.org are different entities, which is why I asked if the problems I have on my self hosted blog has been reported on WordPress.com blogs because I can’t test the issue with the sidebar menus in editing and creating posts and pages because you need to have plugin installed, and my WordPress.com blog is a free blog that doesn’t allow plugins.

However, the problem with the custom colours in the paragraph block, the featured images disappearing, and the issues with the sidebar menus started at the exact same time when I first used WordPress the day after the latest update.

Therefore, if the custom colour issue is on both WordPress.org and WordPress.com then the others issues that started at the same time might also be on WordPress.com blogs.

Furthermore, I have contacted WordPress.org about the issue (I posted the link to that forum topic in my previous message) and they can’t explain why it’s happening. Nor has anyone been able to tell me why the custom colour issue is happening on both WordPress.org and WordPress.com.

Even with a completely new, clean, and defaulted WordPress.org blog the issues are there and in debugging mode the issues remain. I’ve accessed both blogs on 6 different browsers, two different computers, and cleaned caches galore, and the issues are still there.

Having to live with one issue for a year is one thing, but to have to live with three issues for a year is just too much, especially if on two different blogs on two different platforms

  • which is why I asked if the problems I have on my self hosted blog has been reported on WordPress.com blogs

Not as far as I can see, and I cannot reproduce the problem here on WordPress.com as described.

Nor has anyone been able to tell me why the custom colour issue is happening

We’ll get that addressed at https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/issues/51747 as soon as we can.

Even with a completely new, clean, and defaulted WordPress.org blog

Please understand that we cannot assist with WordPress.org problems here.

Because WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two entirely separate entities, we cannot access files or data for sites that are hosted elsewhere, so WordPress.com staff can only assist with sites that are hosted on our servers. You can find more information here about the differences between WordPress.org software and WordPress.com: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

https://wordpress.org/support/ is a great resource for sites using the open source WordPress.org software, and you can find support for that at: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

    Hi,

As I’ve said, I’ve used the WordPress.org forum and I’ve shared in this thread three links to me using that forum, but no one has ever been able to help resolved the issues I’ve taken to the WordPress.org forum, which includes all the current issues.

So it looks like I’m stuck with three problems caused by the WordPress update yet again. I wish WordPress didn’t develop bugs like this all the time.

Who actually creates the WordPress updates that gets rolled out to update the self-hosted and WordPress.com blogs dashboards? It was there update that caused the problem so they should know how to fix it, so how do I talk to that team? Because the WordPress.org forum can’t solve it
