WordPress Migration

    We have had a self hosting wordpress since 2008. Love it. However, our current host is going out of business and I need to migrate to our new host (AT&T) asap. I am using filezilla to download and was shocked to learn that wordpress files under /public in the root directory are 10.6 GB. It is taking me days to download and upload. Is this normal?
    Second, as I do not understand the WordPress File structure it is difficult for me to narrow it down to something more manageable. Any recommendations on how to clean my site up to something more manageable.
