WordPress not recognize my sign-in when I visit other WP blogs

I have talked with support and they have been more than friendly and helpful, and the issue is briefly handled but the problem persists, and I am at a total loss as what to do. I shall try to explain my problem as simply & clearly as I am able:

I use e-mail to check the other blogs I follow. That is, if someone like a post on my blog, I receive an e-mail. In that e-mail are links to posts from that persons blog.

But if I click on their post link and sent to their page, WordPress NO longer recognizes me as a user. Not only do I no longer ‘follow’ this page, but if I click ‘follow’ I am asked if I would like to sign up to be on wordpress!

At this point, if I then return to my home page I will find that WordPress no longer recognizes me there as well! There no longer an admin bar. Though I follow my own site, the follow button now is set as if I do not.

BUT, if I use a saved link on Safari to go directly to my stat page I am recognized and still logged in!

Support says it is a Safari security issue and recommends that I click the “allow” button, but no such button appears for me.

Finally, if I clear out my cache and clear my cookies my problem clears up for maybe three or four e-mails and then the issue returns.

Can anybody help? I am at a total loss as to what to do.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I wonder, could it be an issue with cookies on some sites NOT being accepted, and thus my wordpress account is not connected?

As a possible clue, going through my e-mails a few WP blog pages DID connect with my word-press account, though a majority did not.

  • Hi there,

Are you using Safari 12? If you have the cross-site tracking feature enabled in Safari 12 that blocks us from tracking your login across different sites on WordPress.com.

Our developers are investigating the options available to us after this change, but for now the only option is to disable that setting in Safari if you want this to work, as this setting does not give you the option to set exceptions for specific websites.

Similar blocking will also be coming to Firefox and Chrome soon, and any service using a single login for multiple sites, not just WordPress.com, will be facing these problems. Unfortunately this is the web that stuff like the Facebook data scandal and GDPR has created. We’re looking at ways to still have things work as they used to on WordPress.com, but ultimately we’ll need to get used to a web where privacy trumps convenience.

It worked! Thank you so much for responding. The help I’ve received, both live and in this forum, has been excellent. This problem has been so frustrating to me. I’ve had to sign in and sign out dozens of times all ready just to properly access my own page. But it appears as if this has solidly worked!

  • This is fantastic! Thanks for sharing.
