WordPress Novice!

I’m new to wordpress and still playing around with it. I know HTML and Dreamweaver but don’t feel it’s giving me any idea of how to intuitively work around the wordpress.com site. I have a couple of questions I can’t seem to find the answers to anywhere online (most of the resources are for wordpress.org)
Q1. I know how to create a custom menu by clicking on the ‘customize’ link located beside the ‘Themes’ icon. My question is this, can I link pages when I add them through the link under ‘Manage’ on the dashboard? If I add a new page by clicking -‘site pages’ > ‘add’ and if I make 2 pages one being the parent of another can I link those pages to the main menu I’ve created in Customize Menu?
Q2. I know how to make a page a parent or child of another page but I’m not sure I fully undertand what that does????
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi desperatelylovingallthingsnice,
If I add a new page by clicking -‘site pages’ > ‘add’ and if I make 2 pages one being the parent of another can I link those pages to the main menu I’ve created in Customize Menu?
You can, yes. I see you have already added several parent and child pages to your menu, do you need any further help with this?
Q2. I know how to make a page a parent or child of another page but I’m not sure I fully undertand what that does????
Creating child pages is a way of ‘grouping’ pages together. For example, if you had a Help page on your site, the URL of the parent page would be:
desperatelylovingallthingsnice.wordpress.com/help/And the URL for child pages would be something like:
desperatelylovingallthingsnice.wordpress.com/help/topic-one/I hope that helps but please let me know if you have any questions :)

Hi thanks for the reply. Can you tell me how else I can link pages to the menu besides through the “customise” option beside “Themes”
Also regarding child and parents I suppose I don’t understand how I use them on the site or how the user would use them. Like I’m confused as to whether they’re subpages?
Also I understand tags and categories group pages but again I’m a bit confused. Do they just appear as links on the page which link to other relevant pages in the category? If so how do I apply the categories to my design? Thanks a mil!

Menu links can only be added through your Customizer in My Sites > Themes > Customize > Menus.
Also regarding child and parents I suppose I don’t understand how I use them on the site or how the user would use them.
They are used to group content together under one page. Creating sub pages is optional, you don’t have to use them. It’s not something that will impact visitors to your site because even if you don’t create physical sub pages, you give the appearance of that by adding them as sub pages in your menu — like you’ve done with the CV link.
Do they just appear as links on the page which link to other relevant pages in the category?
On the Dara demo site you’ll notice categories are displayed at the top and categories are displayed at the bottom of the post:
https://darademo.wordpress.com/2011/09/20/some-much-needed-vacation/
Clicking those links will display all posts in that category or tag.
If so how do I apply the categories to my design?
We have some information about adding categories and tags here:
