WordPress – ok to sign in? should pssword be changed?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am (struggling) with setting up a blog for the first time and have chosen word press- came to the forums in hopes of finding tips on getting started. While researching word press I came upon a website? that looks like it is affiliated with word press but am not certain and wish to verify, as it also looks like it could be a hijacking of some kind of (all of) word press. If that is the case is it safe to enter user name/passwords until any matter is resolved? The site I am looking at is this one (I can get to this forum from this site as well) – [Link removed – why give them a status of a link from here – Mark]

We are aware of this blog scraper.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you timethief; I’m unaware of what a blog scraper is (i’ll look it up) but is it ok to continue with same user name/password during a blog scraper?
    Thanks

  • Unknown's avatar

A blog scraper is a person who copies from another blog and places that content in his or her own blog. There are many operating all over the internet at any point in time.

In what way do you think this has anything whatsoever to do with your usernname and password?

Did someone lead you to believe that it did?

From wikipedia: Blog scraping, is the process where automated software scans hundreds of thousands of blogs per day, searching for and copying content. The process is sometimes referenced by the name given the software or individuals responsible for the action, “blog scrapers.”
“Scraping” essentially stands for copying, or in the case of copyrighted material, stealing content off a blog that is not owned by the individual initiating the scraping process. The scraped content is often used on Spam blogs or splogs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog_scraping

What a heck of a thing to learn about on my first day. Better to know than not to!
    Thanks.

  • Unknown's avatar

Nobody led me to believe anything, I don’t know anyone here that I know of; I just don’t know the answers and am always worried about what I don’t know. When the site looked like this one I was worried somebody could get my user name and password too and just wanted to see if I should change it.

  • Unknown's avatar

If you are worried about your username and password then you can take action to change them. It would be a strange choice to make though given that you have only been here for 1 hour and that your blog has no content. http://shelvonne.wordpress.com/

I take it that you speak either Mandarin or Cantonese. Is that correct?

  • Unknown's avatar

no I don’t speak either one I speak english – the site is in english. I posted the site I can read the whole entire forum, in english. It’s not in another language.

  • Unknown's avatar

That’s fascinating because if you click the link you provided above you will not be seeing English only. You will also be seeing Chinese.

However, that really doesn’t matter when it comes to your own blogging business does it? And, of course, clicking it would only drive up that stats on the scrapers blog so that wouldn’t be a wise thing to do.

  • Unknown's avatar

is there some way that I can send a print screen to somebody so that somebody will believe what I am seeing? A customer service rep?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have already alerted staff that within an hour of the last blogger throwing a fit over the same issue that we now have you posting the same link again. So there’s no need for you to do anything other than attending to your blogging.

As you are a beginner you will need some resources. Here you are https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=11280

    Happy blogging!

I am sorry if you’ve seen this link before. I only came to get help. I never received the answer I needed regarding using username and password can you please direct me to the proper person for this. the contact place said that they were closed for the weekend.

If i have any other questions in the future I assume they will always be greeted with such harshness, this is normal procedure?

  • Unknown's avatar

IMO I have not been harsh at all.

    (1) If you wish to apply for another username then please do so just be sure not to use the same email address. http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/12/19/why-must-my-e-mail-address-be-unique/

    (2) If you choose to change your password then that’s easily done here -> Dashboard -> Users -> Your Profile
scroll down, complete the fields and click “Update Profile” when you are done to save

    Update Your Password
If you would like to change your password type a new one twice below. Otherwise leave this blank.
    New Password:
    Type it one more time:

    (3) Doing these things does not require staff assistance. Any blogger can do them on their own. You will receive an email confirmation with a link in it for verification purposes.

  • Unknown's avatar

You might want to consider re-reading this post then, from the side of the fence where those who are learning to blog sit, not where the bloggers are sitting.

Yes, you are very, very harsh. Put politely. I’m assuming you are a representative for Word Press. No thank you.

  • Unknown's avatar

of course, that’s “pre-edit”. You’ve edited all along.

  • Unknown's avatar

Actually, timethief, I’m doing much more than throwing a fit. Careful, shelvonne, or this thread will be censored (both of my threads on this subject were “closed” by the WordPress censors). Before this truthful reply is removed, however, you may want to know that ALL of WordPress.com has been hijacked by Jaylee.cn. Gee, it must be nice having a company such as WordPress run by non-paid volunteers that have very little sense of customer service, but manage somehow, despite inemptitude, to make a whole lot of money for the company. In short, shelvonne, you are being told by these “guides” that your hijacked blog is your responsibility; that you should take it up with the Web-hosting company (in this instance, Dreamhost.com), or take it to court, as I (we) are doing. Hint: Take screenshots of the capture and record all this “help” you’re getting from WordPress. At this time, WordPress is unable or unwilling to assist you. They’re just trying to keep the issue quiet. Oh, by the way, timethief, the media are aware of this issue.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @shelvonne
I have not in any way shape or form claimed that I represent wordpress. Our forums are always “manned” by bloggers with a wide variety of skills and experience who volunteer to help those who ask questions. Not even our Moderators are paid at wordpress.com.

Put politely from my side I believe that your concerns have been dealt with. Although your blog has zero contents you may apply for another username or, if you prefer, you can change the password on the empty blog. And I have provided instructions for both.

I have also provided a link to all the resources required to commence your blogging. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=11280

    Happy blogging!

  • Unknown's avatar

Actually, timethief, the contents of my blog appear to be empty; the entire blog has been preserved; both versions — the original and the WordPress-compromised. Oh, your blog has also been captured (as you are probably already aware.

  • Unknown's avatar

shelvonne, this is a very common situation. The course of action to take if your blog contents have been stolen is to contact the host of the blog that is stealing your content and demand that it be taken down. They already told mintmark that they were willing to do so for him/her if they received a proper legal notification.

If as TT says you have no blog contents, but you find it scraping stuff from other WP.com bloggers, you may want to alert them individually by contacting them through their blogs.

I am sorry I made everybody mad when I asked a simple question about were the two sites related, etc. We can never be too careful and I am NEW to this. Getting a spanking for it is just down right dumb. (PRE-edit, of course) why would you go back and edit your posts, even after I reply to them already? That is sneaky. You are not helpful at all, you are mean. Thank you very much mint mark for your info, had I been just told something was up with the site and needed attention at the beginning, all of this could have been avoided. Like I said before, I could read THIS forum – everything- the questions like I was trying to ask, etc., at the other site, in English. What you choose to do with that is your business. If it were me, I’d like to know. If I ever notice anything ‘odd’ anymore and it somehow effects word press, I’ll know that I should most definitely not let them know. That is the only thing I have learned about blogging today.
