WordPress – ok to sign in? should pssword be changed?

mintmark- put that page of yours back up :) share it with china!

You’re doing pretty well so far. If you can handle this level of drama on your first day, there’ll be no stopping you.

So I guess it’s an individual choice then: if you conclude this is a GOOD thing, a workaround for the Chinese censorship, you can leave it to copy your blog. If you think it’s a bad thing, some attempt to steal glory or pimp ad dollars off your work, then contact abuse at dreamhost dot com.

from what I’ve learned in the last several months, it’s a good thing. For the people of China. They’ve got serious issues over there, that affect us here as well. I fully intend to have it on my blog as well :)

Well, thanks for the initiation. Appreciate it. Reeeeaally I do :)

Is the publicity stunt over yet?

Timethief your member name is appropriate.

I feel like I watched a really long, long, long TV drama unfold … it’s weird but to me there was a strange “feel” to this whole communication string. I’m glad it turned out well.

To be honest, whether its a genuine attempt to bring the info to china or not is irrelevant. The person(s) doing it didnt ask for permision, and are doing it illegally. Had I been asked if i mind my blog being copied elsewhere i’d more than likely would have said no, go for it.

However, this person(s) hasnt emailed me, and im guessing he hasnt emailed WP directly asking for permission. Nor has he replied to my polite emails. As such i’ve no choice but to assume its a malicious act, if it wasnt he would reply when some one asks.

Meh, well iv’e emaild DreamHost, but i’m not holding out much hope. And im certainly not paying £250 to get that legal letter they demand. That said, since blog scraping is ilegal, you shouldnt need one. Once you’ve pointed out that the person is breaking the law the host should take action on their own.

    @ tiamatsdisciple
I hear you and I agree with you.

When I said I was glad this turned out well I was referring to the fact that shelvonne started this thread and 2 pages later his or her issues seemed to be resolved.

“To be honest, whether its a genuine attempt to bring the info to china or not is irrelevant.” I couldn’t have said it better. Thank you, tiamatsdisciple.

Now, that depends. When we signed up for blogs, we signed up for blogs that would be available all over the place. If for some reason reception were interrupted in, say, the US, and a workaround was found for that, would this not be simply the provision of a service we’d signed up for, uninterrupted? I don’t know whether WordPress.com have an arrangement with this provider or not, but they’re legally entitled to make such an arrangement according to our ToS and business practices. And it could be argued that they’ve got a responsibility to ensure that our blogs are available in most major countries, this being the expectation when we signed up, a material issue.

Let’s let the courts decide this, raincoaster. You definitely are NOT a lawyer.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m definitely not a lawyer any more than you are.

Have you deleted your blog? I’m still getting http://www.mintmark.com coming up just fine.

  • Unknown's avatar

http://www.mintmark.com is not a blog. it’s a company. Can’t wait till tomorrow. Appointment.

  • Unknown's avatar

The blog located at http://mintmark.wordpress.com appears to be devoid of contents other than a link to the US Mint. The commercial site is coming up just fine and presumably the contents on that site have not yet been blog scraped or we would have heard about it.

It’s reasonable to believe that it will be months and even years before a legal decision is made. The cause of action has apparently not even been filed in the courts as yet. This would indicate that holding one’s breath is not advised.

  • Unknown's avatar

The link to the U.S. Mint has been scraped. Gee, that’s an official U.S. government site. FTC anyone?

  • Unknown's avatar

Oh, FTC means Federal Trade Commission.

Rain, if WP had made an arrangement with that person to do what he’s doing, then i’d be fine with it. So long as i was told about it. But since Mark has already posted saying to take it up with the hosting company, id say its fair to say it isnt the case.

As i said earlier if i’d been asked for consent to have my posts mirroed elsewhere 9/10 id of said go for it. How would you feel if your hard work was stolen and posted elsewhere? No matter if its been xeroxed or what, stolen is stolen.

It all boils down to common courtesy. I manage the webs largest pagan wiki, i learnt early on simply posting material others had written wasnt on. However if you simply asked most of them are more than willing to let you use their material. It’s just being polite.

As for court action, threaten away, but the fact is it’ll cost more than its worth to actually go to court over something like this. Just out of curiosity i looked into getting that letter Dreamhost wants, and over here in the UK it costs £250+vat (£293.75 total). Frankly its not worth the cost, and Drwamhost probably aware that most people wont pursue it due to the cost.

Sure it sucks, i hate it and dont approve of it, but there’s nothing i can do about it. If you’vbe got the cash to throw away on it, then knock yourself out. However as TT has said it’ll be months if not years before it gets to court. And frankly id rather just get on with my life.

Though since the site is being copied somehow, id hope the staff were looking into ways to stop it. The fact he’s copying the site so perfectly is kind of scary.

Being honest, as long as there are RSS, RSS2 and ATOM feeds off blogs, there will always be blog content theives. It isn’t right that they do it, but the only solution is do as Mark stated and pursue the issue with their host abuse department. Many hosts take this seriously. Hopefully Dreamhost will be no exception (just might need a little push).

The domain Jaylee.cn, hosted by Dreamhost, which captured (i.e., scraped, duplicated), without authorizations or permissions, other Web sites (including blogs) on proxy servers and populated them with Google Ads, exists no more.

  • Unknown's avatar

I received an email from Jaylee.cn. In it, he (or she) stated “I am sorry for your poor common sense.” Here was my reply:
    To Jaylee.cn:
“I’m sorry for your poor common sense. In the United States of America, we
believe in Freedom; but Freedom does not mean taking from others without
first asking, and receiving, their permission.”
