WordPress.org user, interested in WordPress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

I just started discovering the WordPress.com platform and noticed some missing stuff (Compared to WordPress.org), and want to know if they are really missing or I just don’t know how to access/use them, and I also have some questions:

    1. I can’t find the ‘Categories’ option in pages to choose my category.
    2. Is there a way to customize my permalinks?

If I purchased the business plan:
    3. Can I install plugins/themes that are outside WordPress.org repository like GravityForms … And plugins I make?
    4. Are plugins like Pods, ACF, Toolset, … going to work in WordPress.com normally?
    5. Can I use a file manager plugin from the WordPress.org repository to add files like .ttf .otf (custom fonts), .svg …? If not, is there a way to add these files? (I really need them for professional customization).
    6. Will I get G-Suite with the business plan or I have to pay a fee for it?
    7. Are the plugin/theme updates going to work the same as how they work in WordPress.org?
    8. (Generally) Will WordPress.org themes and plugins work the same if I install them in WordPress.com?

    Thank you in advance.

  • Hi there,

    1. I can’t find the ‘Categories’ option in pages to choose my category.

As a rule pages don’t have tags and categories, only posts. This is true of both versions of WordPress. If you currently have a self-hosted WordPress site that allows you to set categories on pages, that functionality is either being added by your theme or by a plugin.

    2. Is there a way to customize my permalinks?

We do not allow that on WordPress.com sites, no.

If I purchased the business plan:
    3. Can I install plugins/themes that are outside WordPress.org repository like GravityForms … And plugins I make?

Yes. As long as the plugin’s or theme’s files are zipped as required for installation on a WordPress site, you’ll be able to install it here. Of course, we cannot guarantee it will be fully compatible, or won’t cause conflicts with other plugins on the site. There are also some types of plugins that we don’t allow due to known conflicts with Jetpack or with our server infrastructure:

    4. Are plugins like Pods, ACF, Toolset, … going to work in WordPress.com normally?

    See my answer above :)

Most plugins should work here, but we can’t possibly test every plugin that exists for compatibility, and ultimately it’s up to the plugin author to ensure a plugin plays nicely with other plugins and various hosting setups.

    5. Can I use a file manager plugin from the WordPress.org repository to add files like .ttf .otf (custom fonts), .svg …? If not, is there a way to add these files? (I really need them for professional customization).

We don’t allow file manager plugins, as they can also be used to remove files that your site needs to work.

If you need to import custom fonts and make other changes to your theme directly that cannot be done with only custom CSS, we recommend you instead make a child theme of your theme, add the necessary files and other changes there, and then upload that to your site instead.

    6. Will I get G-Suite with the business plan or I have to pay a fee for it?

We are a reseller for Google’s G Suite, but it’s an additional cost per license/user you wish to add. G Suite is not included in any of our plans, nor are the cost of any premium plugins or premium themes not listed in the WordPress.com theme showcase.

    7. Are the plugin/theme updates going to work the same as how they work in WordPress.org?

Jetpack is included on all WordPress.com sites by default, and is configured to automatically update all plugins and themes you install. So provided nothing breaks, you should never have to worry about plugin updates. That said, you can also manually update via either My Site ->Plugins, or the WP-Admin interface.

One thing to note is that we don’t provide FTP or WP_CLI access, so if a plugin update fails for some reason and the plugin needs to be manually re-installed, you’ll need to contact support to help with that. The Business Plan gives you access to 24/7 live chat, and priority email support, though, so your site should never be down for long if that happens.

    8. (Generally) Will WordPress.org themes and plugins work the same if I install them in WordPress.com?

As long as they’re not incompatible with Jetpack, they should – for the most part your Business Plan site should work exactly like a regular self-hosted site except that Jetpack cannot be removed, you don’t have FTP access, and you don’t have a cPanel or similar interface to configure your server options.
