wordpress.org versus wordpress.com

I need to know that if I delete my account with WordPress.com that it will not affect anything to do with our domain. Domain was purchased from google. I started the process of designing a site/site hosting with WordPress.com, but quickly found that I was over my head. I canceled my plus subscription, but was afraid to cancel the transfer of the domain. I started again with Hostgator for hosting and website design using WordPress.org platform (as was explained to in a previous forum post). When I try to move forward with the hostgator/wordpress process I get a message asking me to uninstall a previous WordPress and reinstall. I am lost as the message when I go to close account seems like it will affect moving forward with creating website/domain etc.

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • I see that you have already deleted your account.

But the answer to this question for anyone else who finds it is “no, deleting your WordPress.com account will generally not affect a WordPress site hosted elsewhere”

The only exceptions would be if you had your domain registered here (in which case the system won’t allow you to delete your account until you deal with that) or if you had a Jetpack connection to your WordPress.com account (in which case you can either choose not to delete, or just set up a new account later when connecting Jetpack again).
