wordpress.org+site host vs wordpress.com biz plan

what is the difference between getting the wordpress.org website and paying a site hosting company and the wordpress.com business plan?

  • Hi –

    This is a great question.

The WordPress installation (.org) is an open source, community maintained project. There’s not an actual company behind it, no dedicated support staff, and you need to provide your own hosting. You are responsible to fix the site, all updates, etc…

WordPress.com is a managed environment. We tend to the nitty-gritty-details that it takes to have a successful site. This allows you to focus on the content. We have dedicated support staff to help you along the way and also host your site(s).

On the business plan you can now upload third party themes and add plugins to the site. We developed this change a few years ago, it has not always been available. Before that change, those were the biggest differences. You couldn’t use plugins or custom themes on WordPress.com.

We don’t throttle your site or increase your hosting fees. The business plan is a flat rate $300/year. It’s billed 1x per year and refundable for 30 days.

Write back with any follow up questions and I’ll be glad to answer those for you.
