wordpress pinging pangs possibly got your blog BANNED
-
tsp,
thanks for the revelation.
{mumbling to self: forum search broken now that we have a search wordpress feature…”what next, wordpress?”} -
So does anyone know how to tell if your .com blog has been mistakenly banned by ping services, and if so, how to get yourself un-banned?
On occasion I will ping myself on Technorati, but only if the pingomatic function hasn’t been working, ie if after 12 hours or so after posting it still shows the last time pinged as the timing of the previous post.
-
You know, I’m still showing up everywhere just fine after a year of letting wordpress.com and my self-hosted wordpress install use pingomatic to notify all the different services. Once in a while I will ping technorati separately after I post something, but they typically come back and tell me they have already been pinged and I need to wait for a while before pinging them again.
I really think that if you just let wordpress ping for you via pingomatic, you won’t have a problem.
It’s a non-issue except for those that try to abuse and game the system.
-
I can’t speak for banning and such, but the stuff in that blog post about pings for future posts is flat out incorrect. WordPress does not ping any services about a future post until after that post has been published.

gathering from what letters says here, we need not worry even if pingomatic sends repeat pings as a result of our re-re-re-re-editing of a post, cos it will “show the last time pinged as the timing of the post.` so i assume repeat pings are not accepted even if they are sent.stuff in that blog post about pings for future posts is flat out incorrect.
tellyworth,
thanks for assuring that. however i do think what got us nervous is the repeat ping issue as a result of multiple editing of a post once it is published.personally i always forget to use pinging services most of the time, and from now on, i simply won’t bother. being patient is better than being banned! :D

I don’t think that pings even occur when an autopost is published; that was an issue we identified last year. Autoposted posts don’t show up in tags and categories until they’ve been edited, as well; it’s all related. Has that been fixed?
sanjidabd, thanks, those are excellent solutions. You work very hard and it’s appreciated.

WOOOO looks like i’m guilty of pinging myself. I’ve never thought about pinging!! My last post i did, i publised and then edited it like 4 times. Do the guys @ wordpress know how hard it is to proofread ur own work? I hoped it wouldn’t bite me on the ass because i didn’t intentionally try that unscrupulous act. If this was for my college paper, i’m afraid i would have pinged myself like 20 times to get every “nick and crany” just right. Looks like i have to think about getting banned more than writing a article.

raincoaster: by “autopost” do you mean future post?
The only recent issues we’re aware of with future posts have been due to clock drift on some servers. Future posts handle pings, tags and everything else in exactly the same way as regular posts: everything happens when it transitions to the Published state (i.e. when the publication time is reached).
-
Yes. Future posts. We noticed last year that they were not getting posted to the Category pages; it turned out to be because pings went out at the time of writing, when there was no post visible. I know it was not supposed to work that way. Has that been changed?
-
Pings and wordpress.com tags are independent, tags don’t rely on pings.
I just tested a future post and confirmed that no pings are sent until the publication time, and global tags work correctly for future posts.
If you can find some circumstances where that doesn’t work correctly, please let us know.
-
Okay, interesting. Of course I can’t find the thread but it was all played out some time ago. I think Andy posted to it? Not sure. Thanks for testing it.

The new version of MaxBloPress Pinging plugin SUCKS!!!! Not the actual plugin though but the registration process that forces WordPress users to sign up for an aweber account and being spammed forever after.
If the user dares to unsubscribe from that crap, he is up for a suprise by installing the plugin on another blog.“Our records indicate that you are already subscribed to this list, but have not yet verified your subscription. Until your subscription is verified, you will not receive any emails from this list. You can verify your subscription by following the instructions in the email that was already sent to you. If you no longer have an email with verification instructions, you will be able to resubscribe after 9:53 AM EDT on Tuesday, April 22 (11 hours and 56 minutes from now). If you continue to have difficulty subscribing after that time, please contact (email visible only to moderators and staff) for assistance. THIS SUCKS!!!” I’m now forced to wait 12 hours until i can publish my article otherwise no pings!
If that’s where WordPress is heading to, it’s not going to be long lasting. If all the plugin developers start making money by forced signups to spam lists – Happy Easter – If the want money, charge for it! End of story. No one should be able to interfere with a users schedule. So think where you going here by allowing this to happen.
