WordPress plan renewal automatically added to checkout (shopping cart)

I don’t think it a good idea for WordPress to place an item (i.e., a plan renewal) into my checkout cart many months before it is due for renewal. This issue is related to the recent changes in the title/menu bar (when Reader was also added).

If anything, I would say that one month prior to the renewal date, when the typical notification by WordPress for an upcoming renewal was issued, would be more appropriate. As it is now, I’d rather not be reminded (every time I log in) that my plan is due for renewal in August of 2025, yet it appears that if I remove the plan from my cart (so as to not see the reminder) if will be removed from the automatic billing I have established.

Why the change? To solicit WordPress users to pay for their plans/domains early?

I would very much like to thank whoever was responsible (at WordPress) for looking into this issue today and changing the behavior of the shopping cart icon (now blue, instead of red) and the subsequent change when the cart is clicked. I like it!

Hi there! I’m happy to read that you liked the change.

Regarding the cart issue, removing the renewal from the cart shouldn’t turn off auto-renew. Feel free to remove it if you wish. Once you do, you can check the auto-renew status of your subscriptions on this page: https://wordpress.com/me/purchases

Auto-renew should still be on for the subscription after you remove the renewal from the cart, but in case you notice it’s been turned off, you can enable it again by following this guide: https://wordpress.com/support/manage-purchases/automatic-renewal/

Please let us know if you have further questions!
