WordPress plan upgrade

  • Unknown's avatar

I would like help on the following please:-
    – I currently maintain a website which is not hosted by WordPress. (brightonembroidery.com). I have already registered with WordPress for a free plan and rebuilt the website as (brightonembroidery.wordpress.com)
    – I now wish to upgrade to a WordPress Personal plan and publish with the original domain name (brightonembroidery.com).

    – My questions are:-

    1) How do I upgrade to a paid personal plan using brightonembroidery.com as the site address?

    2) Can I do this prior to cancelling with the existing hoster?

    3) I wish to change the registered email address to be used with the new WordPress upgraded site. How is this done?

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

  • Hi there,

    1) How do I upgrade to a paid personal plan using brightonembroidery.com as the site address?

When you upgrade to the Personal plan, you’ll be given the option to use your domain on WordPress.com by either mapping it or transferring it here altogether. Instructions on doing that can be found here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/

    2) Can I do this prior to cancelling with the existing hoster?

It’s best to launch your site here first before canceling with your current host. You might need to migrate contents and if you choose to transfer your domain here, the process must finish before you cancel everything with them.

    3) I wish to change the registered email address to be used with the new WordPress upgraded site. How is this done?

If you transfer your domain here, there are three main options for connecting an email address to your domain:

    1. Email Forwarding.

You can forward emails sent to a custom email address (such as (email visible only to moderators and staff)) to your personal email account.

Email forwarding is free but has some limitations. Some free email services (including Gmail) do not allow replies to be sent from a custom address.

    2. G Suite.

It’s possible to buy a yearly license for G Suite from WordPress.com.

G Suite will provide you with a dedicated Gmail inbox. You can then log into your inbox to manage and reply to messages from your custom address.

    3. Other email hosting.

You can set up an email hosting account through any provider of your choice. Popular providers include Zoho (free) and Outlook (paid). The account can then be connected to your domain via custom DNS records.

Further information on the above options can be found in the following support documentation:

If you have any other questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

Hi, many thanks for your response to my queries, that will be useful.
I just have one further request regarding the transfer of email address. I probably didn’t explain the problem clearly enough, so I’ll try to redefine it.

When I initially registered for a WordPress free plan I used my own personal email address as the registered address e.g. (email visible only to moderators and staff). Now that I have developed the new site and wish to upgrade it and republish it with WordPress, I would like to change the email address linked to it to: (email visible only to moderators and staff), which is the group the website represents. Thus any administration emails from WordPress relating to the site or any from anyone viewing the site will use the new address.

Both of these email addresses are registered to me via the same email provider (BTinternet.com), so when the site is upgraded to a personal plan, I simply need to change its related email address to another one belonging to me. I do not need to map it from another ISP. So my question is, when upgrading can I simply ‘edit’ the upgraded site’s email address as part of the upgrade process.

Sorry this is a bit long winded but I hope it makes sense. As soon as I get this clear I can go ahead and upgrade.

    Thanks again

  • Got it! You need to change the email address associated with the WordPress.com account. To do that, go to your account settings page:

Let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you. I’m happy to help.
