  I have searched a lot for this online: can you install the wordpress platform (codex) to use with a free wordpress.com site?

  I think not, but I thought I should at least ask before giving up!

  Now, the reason I want to do this is use the extended plugins and widgets . . . if I can’t install the wordpress platform; is there a way for me to install these widgets without it?

  Here is the WordPress.com support document that expains the difference between .ORG and .COM

  Which widgets do you want to install? Again from the support documents here are widgets we can use here:
  http://en.support.wordpress.com/topic/widgets-sidebars/

  There are also some “work a-rounds” to make text widgets very useful, so please give some examples of widgets you are looking for.

  No – the software on WordPress.COM is pre-done for you and is custom to this site.

  You can get your own host and install WordPress.ORG software. Works almost the same except the Themes are different and a few other small touches, the Themes at .ORG don’t have many of the Widgets that are used on .COM. The extra Widgets on WordPress.COM are so you don’t need Plug-in’s and are done for you as a security and reliability issue.

  Yeah, I thought so, but I would’ve kept obsessing about it until I had 100% sure answer!

  The main widget I’m looking for right now is some sort of vertical floating sharebar; with twitter, facebook, stumbleupon and buzz . . . maybe Digg and tumblr too!

  I see you have made your own social bar in your wordpress.com side bar.

  if you follow dashboard left column–> setting–>sharing

  you can add social media buttons to posts and pages as well.

  thanks :) I used it . . . but I still think the floating bar is much cooler!
