WordPress, please ask blog owners who haven’t touched their accounts for 5+ years if they still want their URL address
-
Hi, there’s a couple of blog names I’d like to use and I checked them by typing in .wordpress.com. They all have the basic intro page and date last accessed. One in particular hasn’t been accessed since November 23, 2012. There are so many inactive blogs that people created to sit on when blogging started getting trendy with no intent to use them.
Is there any way that WordPress.com can email the owners of accounts that haven’t been accessed in 5+ years and ask if they intend to use their blog in the next year? If owners who are just sitting on blog names say they aren’t using them or if the email address of the owners don’t work, any way WordPress can free up those blog names? Chances are, when someone just created a blog to claim the name in 2012 and haven’t touched it since, they’ve already forgotten about the blog by now. It’s be nice to open those names up to people who will use them. Thanks for your consideration.

Hi there, WordPress.com doesn’t delete abandoned or unused websites regardless of the date of the last entry. You can learn more about their policy here: https://wordpress.com/support/changing-site-address/#reusing-other-site-addresses
If there is a site address you are interested in, leave a comment in an open comment or contact form on the site and ask the site owner to transfer ownership to you. If there is no reply, that’s the end of it. If the site owner agrees, they can follow this guide to transfer the site to your WPcom account: https://wordpress.com/support/transferring-a-site-to-another-wordpress-com-account/
Hope that helps clarify, but let us know if you have any other question about this.
Also, in case you missed it, there are a lot more site address options with the addition of dotblog subdomains: https://wordpress.com/blog/2018/11/28/announcing-free-dotblog-subdomains/
