  I’ve just signed up to WordPress and logged in. do I have to pay anything up front? I already have my own domain with Godaddy.com, but its not transferable yet.

  I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

  As for transferring the domain, you can do that by following the steps at https://wordpress.com/support/transfer-domain-registration/

  To set the domain as your transferred domain, you’ll need a Pro plan https://wordpress.com/support/domains/#set-a-primary-address and since the Pro plan includes 1 free year of a transferred domain, I recommend starting there: https://wordpress.com/pricing/
