  I’m new at wordpress and was under the impression that the wordpress software is free. However, when i try to create my site, I am asked to pick between a pro or starter plan. Does this plan include hosting, or would that be additional?

  I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

  Just to clarify, all WordPress.com plans include best-in-class hosting, including the free plan.

  Upgrade plans give you access to additional features, like using a custom domain (yourgroovysite.com instead of yourgroovysite.wordpress.com), additional storage space for your media files, etc. You can see the full feature comparisons on this page https://wordpress.com/support/plan-features/

  Ah, just adding to my above reply that the WordPress open source software itself, which is available at wordpress.org, is free for you to download and install at any 3rd party web hosting provider, like DreamHost, Pressable and the like.

  Just to make sure we’re talking about the same thing, WordPress.com, where we are, is a web hosting provider like the ones I mentioned above, but uses a customized version of that same open source WordPress software.
