WordPress puts comments in trash

  • Unknown's avatar

    1. Why does WordPress put many comments in trash without any reason at all?
    2. Why the deleted comments have several copies in the trash?

    I use plain WordPress.com.

  • We don’t modify or move your comments to the trash ourselves, that’s strictly only possible for administrators on the site.

We do automatically move spam to the Spam section though, is that what you’re referring to?

    No, not spam.

Wordpress puts many comments directly into trash without any reason. Many comments have several identical copies.
    Looks like a bug…

  • I don’t see any comments in the Trash right now. If that happens again, could you leave them there and reach out so we can have a look?

I moved trashed comments back to forum.
Next time I will keep them in the trash and inform you.

  • Hi there,

I see you have a number of IP addresses, email addresses, and various other terms added to the comment blocklist in Settings ->Discussion. Any comment that matches any of those terms will go directly to trash, so if you’re not deleting these comments yourself, that’s what is happening here. This is the only way that comments can be deleted automatically on a site.

Comment that matched items in blocklist used to go either to moderation queue or to spam. NEVER to trash.

I’ve been using WordPress for several years… and never had any problem with moving comments to trash without a reason.

Comment that matched items in blocklist used to go either to moderation queue or to spam. NEVER to trash.

There are two different lists in Settings -> Discussion:

    – Comment Moderation: any comment that matches any terms listed there would be set to “pending” in your comments section.

    – Disallowed Comment Keys: any comment that matches any terms listed there would be sent to the “trash” in your comments section.

For “Disallowed Comment Keys”, it can also trigger on a partial “match”. For instance, if you had the term press listed in there, it would not only block “press” but other words that have that same character string: impressive, espresso, compression, depression, and so on.

I would recommend auditing your “Disallowed Comment Keys” list to make sure you’re not blocking a general character string.

If you see posts going to the trash again, compare their post to anything you’ve blocked in that “Disallowed Comment Keys” list to find why it was sent to the trash.

    I hope that clarifies things.

Additionally, anything that would be sent to Spam is due to the Akismet anti-spam service we use here at WordPress.com.

If a comment would be flagged for moderation, Akismet checks to see if it is spam or not – if it is spam, it goes to the spam folder and if it is not, it goes to moderation.

Items that would be in the “Disallowed Comment Keys” are immediately trashed – they are not checked by Akismet unless you set the comment to be pending or approved.

Ok, thank you all for your explanations.

However, I must stress that I have never before had any problems with WordPress sending comments directly to trash.

Only I myself could do it.

Also, the description (help text) concerning “spam words” does not mention trashing them.

    Kind regards

  • The Disallow list has always sent comments to the trash, ever since it was implemented: https://wordpress.com/support/settings/discussion-settings/#comment-blacklist

Comment Moderation list goes to Pending.

Disallowed Comments list goes to Trash.
