WordPress Reader update problem?
-
WP Reader stopped accepting post and comment ‘likes’ from me as of mid morning today March 22, 2023. Did some change get rolled out today that has broken the function?

Still not working this morning. I don’t seem to be able to upload a screen shot here, but I have an example of one and a WP error message box that comes up. Error message box does not come up with all attempts.
I can “like” some posts and some comments on some blogs through email notification, but that has always been hit or miss.
Firefox browser is up to date. Application is WP Reader. I do not use a cell phone to access WP. Problem started mid morning on 3/22 after I had been using it all morning. I have been notifying bloggers where I can that WP Reader is not working correctly for me at this time at this time, and I am not ignoring them.

Are you able to like and comment on the post on the related website directly instead of in the Reader? You can use the “visit” link in the lower left corner of the Reader excerpt to visit the site itself.

Thank you for replying, Jennifer. I do understand what URLs are and how to use them. Some blogs I am able to go to the blog and like it, some I cannot. I seems to depend on the individual blog and whatever theme they use. The Reader has always been the most reliable way to like and comment, and worked up until mid morning yesterday. I have been blogging with WordPress for 10 years now.
I am hoping someone can tell me why Reader suddenly stopped working, mid session, when it had been working all morning. That may require a WP support person to look at the account and see what may have changed.

Hi Jennifer, add to that the test I just did by going to a blog directly “worked” until I reloaded the page. My “like” and gravatar are now gone again.
-
I am hoping a WordPress administrator can check my account and see if there is any sort of problem associated with it.
-
Thanks for coming back with more details. (My screenshot was just to display how to get to the blog post directly.)
I’ve flagged your forum thread for Staff assistance. Thanks for your patience.

I am experiencing the same difficulty. The problem started on March 22nd around Noon.
Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Hey there folks, can you share what your “liking” usage is like? Do you like posts after you have read them, or are you using “likes” for bookmarking or promoting your site, or for some other purpose? Let us know what’s going on.
Please note if they’re working intermittently, the system can temporarily revoke access if it suspects anything that looks like bulk interactions. After a while, it can permanently block access. If an interaction feature hasn’t worked for several days, you might be out of luck with that feature. If you’re liking things in bulk, please stop for now and share what you have in mind so we can recommend another option.

I do not know the other blogger posting here indicating they have a problem, but as for myself, I have been on blogging on WP for 10 years now and have a good little community of people I stay in contact to varying degrees with and “Likes” are used to let them know I have been there and seen their post even though I may not have time to comment, especially in the case of a few people who post daily and post multiple times in a day. It can be really easy to fall behind with them. Las Vegas Photoblog is one such site. Trying to catch up with him the other day may have triggered this. “Likes” are also used to let someone know I have read their comments back to me. Please note email “like” buttons sometimes work depending on the blog. There is no site promotion going on in terms of my blog.
As for permanently being out of luck, I would hope WP has some way administrative way of resetting things.
I understand your concern, as I have found myself hounded on occasion by people who like my comments repeatedly on other people’s posts, seemingly to get my attention. I ignore those.

Admin question – How long is “a while” before the automated software stops blocking me? It seems there should be an administrative tool available. I assume WP has people on paid business plans that end up in similar binds and need assistance.
-
Hey there,
Thanks for that additional information.
Trying to catch up with him the other day may have triggered this.
Are you able to expand on this please? Was this conducted via the blog or website?
Admin question – How long is “a while” before the automated software stops blocking me?
We wouldn’t be able to divulge that information for privacy and security purposes.

Thank you for responding. I am sorry I did not get back to you sooner, but was out of town most of yesterday.
The problem appears to have been triggered by using the Reader, as accessed through the Firefox browser on a computer. As in the thread above, I also also noted this when going to a website directly and attempting to “like” there. That worked momentarily, but was whisked away within a minute. I have not tried that this morning, as I do not know if that will prolong the problem with your software.
I can reliably “like” SOME posts via the ones I receive in email, ones that have a “like” button associated with it. This historically works only for some blogs. Others, seems to mainly self-hosted sites, so I am assuming it is a plug-in problem, do not work. Recently Derrick J. Knight upgraded, and a number of people could not like or even comment easily on his blog using the Reader. It was traced to a plug-in problem, and the plug in was removed.
I left a lengthy reply on Tim Price’s blog site on his post below which may give you further information.

Admins – Thank you for your time. Please let me know when you have seen the new information I added above, and what the next step is towards problem resolution.

Thanks, we’ve seen it. We’ll need to keep digging for more information. So it worked at first in the reader, then stopped suddenly?
“Likes” are used to let them know I have been there and seen their post even though I may not have time to comment, especially in the case of a few people who post daily and post multiple times in a day. It can be really easy to fall behind with them.
Thanks, that context is helpful. I’d recommend against “liking” posts in bulk, for what it’s worth.
If you go to the site and click like on a post, does it work for you? You can test with this one:
Like this post?
If that does not work for you, may we test using your account?
-
Yes, that is correct. I mainly use the Reader to comment and “like” as it is the most reliable way to do so.
I tried to like the post at you test site. It does not work and does not generate any error messages. Yes, you may use my account to test.
I rarely have liked in bulk, only in desperation at catch up. I am warning bloggers whose site I visit that in the future, I will not be attempting to catch up with them if I fall behind, and why. I suspect there is also a comment metering software at work, though I have not run into that.
