‘WordPress refuses to connect’

  • Unknown's avatar

I am receiving an Error when I try to access my dashboard. ‘WordPress refuses to connect’

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi,

Just to clarify, is this for janicegolderphoto.wordpress.com or a different site?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, it is for that web site.

  • Hmm, I’m not able to replicate that on my end of things.

I’m not having any trouble when I view your dashboard at https://janicegolderphoto.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

What browser are you using? Does it happen if you try a different browser? Are you using any browser extensions? Can you try disabling them and seeing if that changes things?

I am using chrome. I do have a Mac with Safari. I do not edit the site from safari and when I open my site from my domain name (janicegolder.com) in safari I get the site without the WordPress black toolbar – I don’t use Safari for anything and I am not familiar with it.

When I open my site from my domain name in Chrome I get the site with the WordPress Black toolbar, but there is no link to the dashboard and when I try to edit or see my account it says that “WordPress refuses to connect” I do not use any extensions … that I know of.

I had not tried to access the dashboard directly through WordPress, it is not my habit. I am sure I can change my habit and make changes through WordPress, but why can I no longer get to my dashboard from the domain site?

    Thank you for your help.

  • Hello there,

janicegolder.com is not hosted with WordPress.com, and is separate to https://janicegolderphoto.wordpress.com/

To access janicegolder.com , you would need to login via janicegolder.com/wp-admin.

in safari I get the site without the WordPress black toolbar – I don’t use Safari for anything and I am not familiar with it.

This means in Safari, you’re not logged into janicegolder.com/wp-admin.

    I hope this helps.

I am not sure what you mean by “not hosted with WordPreess.com?”

When I open janicegolder.com in chrome (which is were I am also logged into WordPress) I get the black WordPress bar at the top of the page. Doesn’t this mean it is hosted by WordPress? In the past I would hit edit this page from here I could edit and add to any page or post. I could also get to the dashboard from here. Now when I click edit I get ‘WordPress refuses to connect’ and the dashboard is not an option.

When I put ‘http://janicegolder.com/wp-admin’ in the address I am told ‘WordPress refuses to connect’ as well.

Has something changed that I can only make changes to my site from ‘https://janicegolderphoto.wordpress.com/’ ??

I am not sure what you mean by “not hosted with WordPreess.com?”

To avoid confusion, there are three different “WordPress” at play here:

    1. The free, open-source WordPress software which powers your website.
    2. WordPress.org which is the open-source project that works on the WordPress software and where you can get the software for free to use on your own hosting provider.
    3. WordPress.com which is a managed hosting provider of the WordPress software and with whom you’re contacting now.

The site janicegolderphoto.wordpress.com is hosted here at WordPress.com.

The site janicegolder.com is not. It is a second, separate website hosted with Namesecure Hosting. It is also the company where the domain is registered. This is a separate company from WordPress.com, so we have no access to nor the ability to manage or affect anything on this site.

Someone – and we have no idea whom – set up the janicegolder.com URL to load janicegolderphoto.wordpress.com in an iframe. This means it’s displaying a copy of your website hosted at janicegolderphoto.wordpress.com using this code:

    <html><head><title>JANICEGOLDER.COM</title><meta name="keywords" content=""></head><frameset rows="100%", *" border="0" frameborder="0"><frame src="https://janicegolderphoto.wordpress.com" name="JANICEGOLDER.COM"></frameset></html>

As such, you would not be able to manage your website through that URL as it only displays a copy of your website. You can only use the janicegolderphoto.wordpress.com URL to access your site’s backend and editor.

To properly use your domain here at WordPress.com, you would need to upgrade to one of our paid plans and connect your domain to your site so that’s the primary URL visitors see and would allow you to manage your website from your domain.

    I hope that clarifies things!

I understand that I have a free version of WordPress (janicegolderphoto.wordpress.com) . I am the ‘someone” who set up JaniceGolder.com to load my Janicegolderphoto.wordpress.com.

What I do not understand is … When I open my site by entering janicegolder.com, I am shown a WordPress black bar at the top, where I was once able to enter and edit my janicegolderphoto.wordpress.com site. Now it gives me the ‘refuse to connect’ error. I can still go directly to the janicegolderphoto.wordpress.com site and make corrections.

Why do I have this WordPress black bar at the top of my janicegolder.com site if it does not lead me to the janicegolderphoto.wordpress.com site to make correction?

This WordPress black bar only appears when I open janicegolder.com on my desktop computer in Chrome not when I open janicegolder.com in safari or when I open janicegolder.com site on any other computer.

  • Hi there,

To clarify, when you change your domain settings with your current provider (NameSecure) that is only a partial connection to our service.

On our end, we do not know your intent to change your site address until you do that through settings on our end (to finalize the connection) and those settings are only available by upgrading to one of the plans you see here: https://wordpress.com/plans/

where I was once able to enter and edit my janicegolderphoto.wordpress.com site. Now it gives me the ‘refuse to connect’ error. I can still go directly to the janicegolderphoto.wordpress.com site and make corrections.

Until you upgrade and finalize your connection to us, we still think your site address is janicegolderphoto.wordpress.com, and thus it will not work correctly as janicegolder.com. The odd behaviour you are seeing on your site is related to this issue.

Once you upgrade your site, please let us know and we will be happy to help you connect your domain so it fully appears at janicegolder.com and no longer uses janicegolderphoto.wordpress.com as the site address.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
