  if I register the domain name privately at initial set-up do I give up ownership of the web domain name to WordPress?

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  No you do not, the domain is owned by you, but your identity is hidden and all technical and administrative links in your domain registration point to a third-party partner of the registrar so the no one can get your personal information through a whois search.
