WordPress requesting an email verification?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have been receiving emails lately from (email visible only to moderators and staff) with the following request:

    “Dear Brad Koop,

We noticed that you still need to verify your email address. ICANN requires that we temporarily put your website on hold if you fail to verify your address.* Please take care of it right away to avoid disruption of services.

All you need to do is click the button below (it only takes a few seconds). You won’t be asked to log in to your WordPress.com account — we’re simply verifying ownership of this email address. “

    Is this a legitimate email?
    Thanks

    Hi Brad!

Can you let me know if the email looks like this?

    Register a New Domain

The copy sounds pretty close, and it looks like you do need to verify your email address. You should be alright to click the link and verify!

Definitely let me know if you have any additional questions.

Ok, fair enough, but even in the copy you linked me to it says that this is for new accounts. I’ve had this account for a long time so it seems odd to be asked to verify an email address this far into the game.

I just received an email from wordpress asking me how this support query was handled. I had to honestly answer that it was a bad experience because I have been waiting for a reply to my last response. Granted it was not phrased as a question, so I will do so this time.
Why is WordPress asking me for an email verification after I have had an account for this long? Other people in the forums have asked the same thing regarding these emails and one individual even said that after clicking on the link in the email he is still getting these. The “Happiness Engineer” handling that one did not seem to take it too seriously that people are getting suspect emails. No one seems to be asking if it is actually being sent by WordPress. Why is that?
You are a good blog hosting service, but you are by no means the only one out there. When I get treated like this it makes me wonder why I am paying you for hosting me because it feels more like I am just so lucky that you are doing this for me.
If WordPress still doesn’t know my email address after this long I don’t know what clicking on a suspect link is going to do to change that.

PS These emails look a lot like some form of phishing.

    Hey Brad,

Ok, fair enough, but even in the copy you linked me to it says that this is for new accounts. I’ve had this account for a long time so it seems odd to be asked to verify an email address this far into the game.

Did you recently change your email address on your domain by chance? That would trigger a new authorization request. Alternatively, you may never have verified your email address originally, although I suspect this would have caused issues with your domain.

I’m sorry for the delay in response Brad! I would’ve responded to your request either way (regardless of how it was phrased). I was just away over the weekend.

Again, I’m not 100% sure why you’re just now receiving the email verification request. It’s a requirement from ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers).

Can you try to verify your email address? I’m not aware of an issue that leads to continuously receiving the email even after you’ve verified your email address. If that occurs, we’ll definitely get it handled and make sure you’re not constantly pestered with the emails. However, you will need to verify your email address.

I’m sorry if I came across that way Brad. I promise I am taking it seriously. The email is generated per a requirement from ICANN as I mentioned above.

I realize it’s incredibly frustrating, and please know that we’re really grateful for your continued support.

If WordPress still doesn’t know my email address after this long I don’t know what clicking on a suspect link is going to do to change that.

I definitely understand your point here. However, again, the email verification is for ICANN, not specifically for WordPress.com. We know your email address. However, in order for your domain to work properly, ICANN requires that you verify the contact information provided on your domain registration. That’s a completely separate process from WordPress.com.

If you could, please click the link in the email to verify your address with ICANN, and don’t hesitate to ask if you have any more questions!
