WordPress Rich text/WYSIWYG editor alternatives needed.

    Hello,

I love the wordpress blogging platform in all aspects but two – the most annoying being the rich text/wysiwyg editor. I am not adept enough in coding to use the standard editor so I must use the wysiwyg editor. But it has lots of problems and judging form the number of posts I see in the forums about not being able to center things or maintain paragraph formatting, etc, I am not alone. These no paragraph posts, etc really detract from my blog.

I was wondering is anyone has any experience with writing posts in another program using rtf and then copying the rtf file into WordPress. If I did this which WP editor should I use and would this in fact work to solve my editing woes? Has anyone done this successfully? If so I’d appreciate hearing how it works for you.

    Thanks in advance.

If the editor is stripping out your paragraph breaks then using an RTF editor and pasting it into the wordpress editor will not solve your problem.

Right now, the best browser to use is Firefox which is more compatible than anything else.

The best choice however is an offline editor. I have tried most all of them and could live with any of them quite easily.

Thanks for the link. I am still trying to get Blog Desk to work as it seem like one of the best – I just can’t get anyone to tell me where my Blog ID is. Oh well…

Do a forum search. I know we answered that question most recently only a couple of days ago.

Thanks thesacredpath, for the link to the offline editor. It solved the problems I had all weekend, struggling with the HTML. Because I found a way to manage that before the recent update, I was not aware of my lack of knowledge. Now after the update I could not do things the old way, but with the offline editor it works again.

OK, now I’m confused. I thought offline blogging tools were only of use for self-hosted blogs. The offline editor assembles everything and hitting Publish basically does ftp to the server.

With these offline editors, do people just compose then do a Copy and then Paste into the post entry form here at WP.com? Wouldn’t images still have to be uploaded separately?

Actually they work just fine with wordpress.com and actually use XMLRPC to upload the post and images/etc. I’ve been using one (Ecto) for almost a year with .com and never had a problem.

Offline editors save the post on your hard drive, and when you hit the publish button in the offline editor, it uploads the text and images to your blog. There is no need to copy and paste into the editor. Images you put into your offline editor are uploaded to your blog at the same time as the text.

Jaysus. OK, my jaw just plummeted to the floor! All this time I was under the mis-impression that you had to be *online* to do all composition.

What you’ve just told me is astounding in its implications.

Do you mean to tell me someone could actually do a program for the iPhone that I could compose and submit posts with?! That is my dream! (And it makes me ask, why haven’t we seen such software for Windows Mobile or PalmOS?! Or have I not looked hard enough?)

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, those programs could be made. With Apple just recently releasing the SDK for the iPhone (limited release at the moment) it is possible. As far as software for WM an Palm, I don’t know if there is anything or not.

I use the “new blog post” template in MS Word 2007. I can choose the categories, insert photos, bullets, colors, links, etc and publish it directly, or publish it as a draft, to my blog.

I like Word’s spell checker and grammar checker better than the web browser, plus I can look up words in the dictionary and thesaurus right in Word.

Good God! All of this is a revelation and an education to me! Thanks very much!

OK, I have some more questions about this:

    1) You log into WordPress via the software?

    2) Is there an additional service charge for doing that?

Honestly, this is all new and startling to me. I thought I’d need to self-host to do this!

    I open the offline editor.

    I make the post.

When I’m happy with it, I press the publish button and the offline editor connects to my blog via xmlrpc and the post is uploaded to my blog.

    Done.
