WordPress says site is private but it's not

I set up a (free .com) wordpress site, and when I put the domain name into the search bar to see how it looks, there is a message that says the site is marked private by the owner. It’s not though, as I have already changed my privacy settings to public. Any idea how to fix this?

OMG, I found it. Go to Mysite, scroll to the bottom to settings, scroll down. Just after language and time, is privacy settings. know mine works.

@rockymountainhighschoolclassof82 – Sorry, I didn’t realize you were asking for help on changing the settings! I thought you knew what your setting was and you were trying to figure out why it was showing as private when you knew it was public.

Okay, let me re-explain my problem. I am the original poster of this thread, and my .com wordpress site is saying it’s private when it’s not. Yes, I have changed my privacy settings to public. I have other WordPress sites and have done this before, so I am not new to WordPress. However, I have never had this problem before.

I wish I was able to help. Given what you’ve said, and clarified, I’m short on ideas. Unfortunately, it seems like there’s a code error or something’s been corrupted in the code preventing it from returning to public, but I’m not certain.

Only thing I can think of is to set the site to private, publish, and then reset it back to public and publish again. See if it triggers something in the coding to fix itself. Probably won’t work, but it’s at least something to try.

I’ve checked the settings for swordsandsorcery.wordpress.com and it is marked as Private:
https://wordpress.com/settings/general/swordsandsorcerycom.wordpress.com
When you mark the site as Public and click ‘Save Settings’, what happens? Are you able to make the change using a different browser?
If you are still having problems, I can mark the site as Public for you — just reply to confirm you’d like me to do so :)

I originally had the site marked public. I changed it to private for a bit on the suggestion of another user on here, who said that setting it to private and then flipping it back to public might work. It did not. It is now set to public again but showing the same thing and saying it is private. No fix.

I visited swordsandsorcerycom.wordpress.com and it is public now! If the site isn’t showing as public for you, can you try clearing your browser cache? There are instructions for different browsers here:
Did the issue also occur when using other browsers?

I cleared my cache and it is still showing up as private despite being marked public. No change. I’m only giving it one more day before I move on and just be done with WordPress altogether.

Okay, just wanted to let everyone know that I just deleted the site. Nothing I was doing was fixing the problem, and I don’t have anymore time to waste on it. I am moving on and my site will be hosted elsewhere. Thanks to everyone who tried to help.

@theotherlestrangegirl – Did you entirely delete the site following this guide: https://en.support.wordpress.com/delete-site/ which also makes the site address unavailable?
@gemmacevans FWIW-even before @theotherlestrangegirl posted that she had deleted her site, her site displayed for me as Private in both a regular tab and in a Private browsing tab in FF. Even now after she advised that she deleted her site, it shows as Private in Chrome’s incognito window.

@justjennifer Hummm that’s strange. The site is showing as deleted for me (even in an incognito tab) and is no longer listed in the account. It sounds like some caching might be coming into play here.

swordsandsorcerycom.wordpress.com has been deleted from the account you are logged in to (theotherlestrangegirl).
However, I saw you mentioned swordsandsorcery.wordpress.com in earlier reply — that site is owned by a different account (cupidd55) and is still active.
The two sites have similar names.

Thanks, @gemmacevans – Normally I clear browser caches each time I shut down the browser in order to avoid such issues. Here however it would seem that the site address given by @theotherlestrangegirl in her 2nd above post was incorrect.
https://swordsandsorcery.wordpress.com/ is still Private (and the site owner is probably wondering about all the site visits)
https://swordsandsorcerycom.wordpress.com shows as deleted.
