WordPress says the domain I want is taken but it isn't

  • Unknown's avatar

When I tried setting up my wordpress account with the domain I wanted (katiecakes.wordpress.com) it kept saying it was taken. But if you go to katiecakes.wordpress.com, there is nothing there. I took a temporary name in the meantime so I could access the forum, but I really would prefer that domain over this one. Any ideas why this is happening?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    katiecakes.wordpress.com is no longer available.

The authors have deleted this site.

it has been deleted – it might become available again about two years from whenever it was deleted

There’s no way to find out when that’ll be, right? And no way to contact WordPress directly to ask?

they don’t have dates on those things – you can try asking the staff – don’t know what their policy is for giving out delete dates – never seen anyone ask

I have flagged this for the staff so you can be the first to ask – you can be a trailblazer (not the basketball team)

you be welcome & good luck

  • If a site URL is not listed as available during site creation, then there is no way to activate it again.

  • To clarify, if a deleted site meets the criteria to have its URL recycled, it will be listed as an available URL when creating a site. There is no extra action that is required to recycle it and make it available.

    Does that make sense?

staff-ozmodiar – a bit lower in the thread the OP was wondering if the day the name might become available was available? I think they understand the two year thing – but they were wondering if WordPress.COM would give the two year date so they would know if it was next week or next year

    thanks

What I’m understanding is that the answer is never lol

  • This particular URL does not fit the criteria for being recycled.

In general, I would caution against talking about a “two year” sort of recycling rule. It isn’t as simple as that, generally. And the number of situations where someone would just have to wait a few weeks for a domain to become available would be fairly small.

Okay, thanks so much for your help. I’ll let go of my dream of having that URL
