WordPress screen goes blank

  • Unknown's avatar

It’s weird: every now and again when I’m editing a post, if I save the latest update, the screen (the bit you write on) goes blank.
I panicked the first time it happened, thinking I’d lost everything, but if I refresh the screen it comes back.
    I’m running Windows IE 11.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Don’t delete anything. There’s a bug going around, so I flagged this for staff to fix. In the meantime, subscribe to your own blog via email so you have a copy of all new posts.

    *gasp*
    Thank you!
I’m trying to make a backup too, but I’m getting a 500 Internal Server error.

Probably related. Hang tight, I expect it’ll take them a day to get this fixed for you.

    OK, will do. Thanks:)

  • Hi Lisa,

I don’t see anything immediately wrong with your account. This sounds like a browser-related issue to me. Are you sure you’re using IE 11 and not IE 10? Can you try Firefox or Chrome and see if you still have the same problem in those browsers?

If so, could you please make a screenshot of what you’re seeing? Here are instructions for how to make a screenshot: http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/

You can upload it to your blog’s Media Library and I can look at it there.

I think it may be a browser-related issue too, I haven’t had it happen with Firefox. But I don’t like using Firefox, so I don’t use it enough to know whether it might happen using it or not. (I don’t have Chrome, even though Google keeps installing it whenever my back is turned, I uninstall it ASAP, the less Google rampages around inside my files invading my privacy the happier I am.)
I am quite sure my browser is IE11, I’m running it on both my computers (a laptop running W8.1, and a desktop running W7.)
The problem only occurs every now and again and I haven’t been able to detect any pattern, I’ll take a screen shot next time it happens.
    Thanks, Lisa
PS I’ve got Malware stuff installed so I don’t think it’s my own personal bug.

  • Hi Lisa,

Ok, a screenshot would be great. Also, if you use any browser extensions or add-ons of any kind with IE, try disabling those.

Also check to see if you’re using IE in compatibility mode and if so, please disable that.

I don’t think I’ve got any browser extensions, how can I tell if I’ve got any? (Do you mean things like a Bing toolbar, which I have on the laptop but not the desktop?)
I can’t see a compatibility icon (I’m using the laptop now, W8.1, in desktop mode, *not* the tile/app mode) it looks like a little broken rectangle, right? Where would I find that?

  • Hi Lisa,

For the add-ons, try these steps (under view installed add-ons):
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/manage-add-ons#ie=ie-11

These instructions should help you determine whether you’ve compatibility mode on for your site:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/use-compatibility-view#ie=ie-11

Let me know how that works!

Ok, I’ve got a screen shot, and I’ve saved it in my media library.
    Cheers
    Lisa

Oops, forgot to say that the screenshot was taken when using my laptop running windows 8.1 in desktop mode and IE 11. (I have auto updates happening on that so it’s always the latest version).

  • Hi Lisa,

So this happens when you click Save Draft, and then if you refresh the screen, your saved draft loads normally, correct?

Did you check to see if you’re using any add-ons?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Sorry, forgot to tell you:
I don’t think this laptop is using compatibility view: I checked the settings under tools and there’s nothing listed there.
But the adds-on, my goodness, I had no idea that this lot were all lurking there:
    Adobe PDF reader
Google Toolbar and helper (I only keep this for the Share button)
    Windows Media Player
MS Silverlight (I thought I’d got rid of this)
    Bing bar and helper
    Office Doc cache helper (huh?)
Lync Browser Helper and Click to Call (I suspect this is spyware that slipped past Malware Bytes)
    Shockwave Flash object
Blog this in Windows Live Writer (where did this come from??)
Send to One Note (didn’t know this was here because there’s no icon to actually use it)
One Note Linked Notes (as above)
    (Oracle) isInstalled class (huh?)
    Java plug-in SSV helper
    Java plug-in 2 helper
This is a lot of plug-ins to disable, can you perhaps name a couple of likely suspects and I’ll try disabling them first to see what happens?

  • Unknown's avatar

PS Have just done a search, the Lync thing is for the IE app when using Win8.1 in tiles/apps mode, which I never do.

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok, with my desktop where it seems to happen more, I have these plugins installed
    Shockwave Flash object
Google Toolbar (Google Toolbar helper disabled)
    Live ID sign in helper
    Office Doc Cache handler
    Send to One Note
    One Note Linked Notes
    IsInstalled Class
    Java Plug in SSV
    Java Plug in 2 SSV
and I’m not in compatibility view.

  • I don’t immediately spot the culprit, although I’m not familiar with what all of those are. Flash should be fine (and in fact, is necessary). I doubt One Note or Google Toolbar have anything to do with it.

If I were you, I’d try disabling all of them, clear your browser cache, test to see if you have the same problems. If you don’t have the problem with all of them disabled, re-enable one plugin at a time until you see which one is causing the issue. Let me know what happens when you try that out.
