WordPress Secure Fix

I’ve been emailed by Simon from “WordPress SecurityTeam” ((email visible only to moderators and staff)) telling me that my site is compromised and needs an urgent fix or it will be taken down. I was sent a link for payment for the work to be done but I am very suspicious that this is legit as the Finance Team does through to a named individual (YUSUF ADENIYI ADEYEMI). Is this correct?

That kind of emails is ALWAYS SPAM.
First emails send by wordpress.com are always form @wordpress.com and nothing else.
Second wordpress.com will never beg for money for problems on a free wordpress.com. Also taking care of security is included in all wordpress.com sites, even free sites.

Thank you for your swift reply. I had a gut feeling that this wasn’t correct and you’ve made me suddenly realise that a WordPress person would not be using a gmail account. I’m glad that I told them I needed to think about it. I appreciate your help.

Yes – I did this as soon as I realised what was going on. It was a very sophisticated scam without any of the usual tell tale flags (apart from the email address). They copied the WordPress site perfectly.
