WordPress seems almost completely hung up for me

  • Unknown's avatar

WordPress is basically not functioning for me at all…all day.
Several minutes wait for any page to load, just now after several minutes the text editor finally came in with no tools visible and only half my post displayed, etc.
This is very strange never seen anything like it in the three years or more I’ve had this blog…
Everything else seems somewhat slow, too, earthlink, google etc—but wordpress is the worst, basically unusable.

I saw a reference here in the forums (or on a link from timethief or raincoaster??) yesterday about wordpress blogs recently being used by a hacker to attack an unnamed site with continual pingback requests and that the only symptom the blog owner would see would be mysterious slowness, could that be happening to me???

There was some kind of complicated fix I cant remember, turning off pingbacks apparently wasn’t good enough. And now response time is too slow for me to find anything. Yikes. at this point I am very worried that this will be permanent, don’t know what to do…

    Thanks for any help…

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Your website is faster than 91% of all tested websites.

It appears you may have a connectivity issue or a browser related issue.

    1. If you are not running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/ please try upgrading or switching first.

    2. If you are using an IE browser in compatibility mode please disable that mode. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1196-internet-explorer-compatibility-view-turn-off.html

    3. If you are running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/

    (a) Try clearing your browser’s cache http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050

If applicable see here for instructions on how to clear the cache for Chrome and Safari on the iPad:

    (c) Disable all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily.

    (d) Try enabling HTTPS: http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/

Add both *.wordpress.com and *.wp.com to your list of trusted sites under the Security tab. Make sure to uncheck the box for “Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone.” http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/#frequently-asked-questions

    4. If you are not successful let us know:
    (a) Exactly what kind of device are you using to connect to the internet and to WordPress.com.
    (b) Exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary http://www.whatbrowser.org/
    (c) And what any error reports you receive state.

    No that’s what’s happening here.

    Thank you tt.
(I am working my way down your list.
Clearing cache did not solve problem, btw)
I have gotten to the Javascript part and in Firefox help see this mssg: How to ennable Java if it’s been blocked.
Is ‘Java’ the same as ‘Javascript’? (that’s how ignorant I am!)

here’s the rest of what it says (makes me nervous about enabling java for wordpress, as I dont know in what way a site is supposed to be “trustworthy” !!):

In order to protect you, Firefox has stopped some versions of the Java plugin from running automatically because of security issues. However, you can still use Java on trusted sites if necessary. We’ll show you how.
    Table of Contents

    Activate Java once
Always activate Java for a site

Warning: You should only attempt this on sites you trust.
    Activate Java once

When you see the “Click here to activate” message, simply click it to load the Java content normally.

(me again) Should tell it to only activate Java “once” which apparently means that I click to ok Java on a one-time basis every time I am on a site? Sorry to be such a moron about this.

It all seems very fishy, anyway, since everything was fine until this morning and I certainly didn’t go and change any settings/ disable anything…Will keep going down the list of your suggestions, thanks…

if you do not enable both JavaScript and third party cookies on your browser your problem will persist and will escalate.

I am using firefox23, apparently the most current version.
I am using a windows computer, about a year old (?I think)

I am trying to get into my dashboard so I can enable https but so far it is completely hung up, cant get in and no error mssg yet, just nothing.

In your instruction below, where is this security tab? do you mean the security tab in firefox? or somewhere in my dashboard? (still hung up).
And am I supposed to include the asterix (*.wordpress.com)???

I couldn’t see a box to uncheck labelled “require server verification, etc”
at least not under firefox’s security tab…

Will go back and see if I can figure out the difference betw Java and Javascript, and why the latest version of Java is apparently dangerous…

    (d) Try enabling HTTPS: http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/

    Third party cookies are enabled.

Could you tell me if “javascript” is the same thing as ‘Java’ ?

In firefox/mozilla help I haven’t yet found anything about javascript only Java. Firefox says:

Firefox has stopped some versions of the Java plugin from running automatically because of security issues. However, you can still use Java on trusted sites if necessary.

Seems like this is something they’ve done for everybody, not just me and that its been in effect for a while, not just since this morning.

I still can’t get into my dashboard, so can’t enable https.

I guess I will give up on all this for now and continue again tomorrow.

    thx!

Thanks, timethief! yes, it helped. Apparently firefox hides the javascript disable feature now, you have to sneak in a back door to even find whether it’s enabled or not.
Javascript is enabled, no problem there.
I still can’t get into my dashboard, or even onto my blog at all. Totally hung up, just says “connecting” endlessly.

@ Timethief –the problem has ended as mysteriously as it started! All of a sudden everything is back to normal. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for all your help!
