WordPress Site broken?

I have a wordpress website that for the life of me and everybody I know cannot get up and running to even view let alone edit.
I paid a company to build me a website 3 years ago and given I spent thousands on it and they never completed it I asked for the files.
They gave me the files which is fine short of the fact we cannot get them working.
please help me understand what I am doing wrong, or for that matter why I cannot get it to work in some sort of fasion in order to complete it.
Me and the company had a falling out so communication is not to be trusted.
there is nowhere I can add an attachment so if you could so kindly help me moving forward that would be much appreciated.
I just want my website :)

From what you’ve described, your site is not hosted on WordPress.com so we’re unable to help you here.
If you’re sure that the website was built using the open source WordPress software and you have the files and database backup with you, you can find a web hosting company and start hosting your site.
For self-hosted WordPress questions, you’re recommended to post them at the WordPress.org forum and seek help from the experts and volunteer members there. You may need to register an account if you don’t already have one.
