WordPress site not function as usual

  • Unknown's avatar

While writing my last post I could not preview it. Moreover, although everything was as it should be on my post, when it was sent the captions were no longer below the photos but shown in the first line of the following text. Also a series of photos that should have been a slideshow were shown as a gallery. What’s going on?????

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @margaretbirney, these are all new issues, right? First, can you make sure your browser is current, and also test to see if you see the same problem in another browser?

If it’s the same in both browsers, and you’re up to date, can you send a link to the affected post or page, or even create a test draft that has the same issue? We’ll take a look.

If switching browsers works, I’ll bet one of these troubleshooting steps will fix it:

Let us know what you find!

the URL for my WP site is:

    http://www.margaretandterrysgreatadventure.travel.blog//

I have tried using a different computer and different browsers and had the same problem. That is, the Preview option does not work as it has in the past and the post, when published, lacked certain characteristics such as captions and arrangement of the photos.

  • Hi there,

Is this happening on all your posts? I need you to tell me the title of the post where this is happening so I can have a look.

  • Unknown's avatar

This just started happening with the post “Ferie in Muggia” Part II. Except for a note to followers, I have not tried to write another post

  • Hello Margaret,

Can you tell me what browsers you’re experiencing this on please?

The reason being is that I can’t seem to replicate the loss of captions or the slideshows there.

Also, can you tell me if there’s any adblockers or browser extensions at play within these browsers.

    Many thanks.

I am on Chrome and use Yahoo and Google as my browsers. On the WP site, my post looks perfect–captions in place & photos as I had placed them. It is only when the post is emailed to followers that the problem occurs. I don’t know if there are adblockers or browser extensions with these browsers–only that this is suddenly a new problem

  • Hello Margaret,

Ok, are you able to get one of these emails sent to you, to see if this happens on the browser you’re looking at please?

    Many thanks.

The emails are sent to me and those who are following me. It’s just that when the emails arrive, the captions are not in place and a group of photos set up as a slideshow arrived as a gallery

Also, I cannot Preview . That is, a preview menu does come up, listing several options, eg desktop, ipad etc, but this does not lead to an actual Preview. I used to just click on Preview and it would then go to a new screen, showing the Preview, and I then could close it when I finished reading it

Ok, so the preview is not the full post and won’t open as the same as the seeing the blog post, therefore the slideshow, won’t appear as a slideshow when viewed email.

I’ve also noticed that the first image in the post does not have a caption.

Please note that a preview of a post, is meant to entice people to the site itself to see the full content.

Are you seeing, “Preview in a new tab” ?

  • Unknown's avatar

yes, I see “Preview in a new tab”

    Margaret

  • Hello there,

Ok, so if you click Preview in a new tab, this will result in the preview opening in a new tab/screen.

  • Unknown's avatar

I have tried that before and just tried again, but I only get a page showing the title of my blog and “oops this page can’t be found.” A short time ago, a friend and follow emailed me that he had received my post with captions in place on his Android cell phone.

    Margaret

  • Ok, first please make sure that your browser is up to date: https://browsehappy.com/

If it is not, please try updating your browser or switching to a different browser.

If it is, please do these two things:

    1. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies.

    2. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.

Please let us know how each step goes for you, and which browser (and version of) you’re using if you’re still having trouble.

thank you–I will try all those suggestions in the morning

    Margaret

  • Hi Margaret, I just wanted to be sure we’re all on the same page. Emails will not look like your website. It may have some of the text and images, but to experience the full website, the reader would need to click a link that opens the website itself.

So when your friend gets an email on his android phone, the email will not match what you would see in the preview for Mobile. The mobile preview shows what your site looks like if your friend clicks a link in the email from his android phone.

Can you confirm whether the friend is viewing an email or actually clicking a link to view it in the browser? Once that’s definitely cleared up, we can work on the preview issue, but if you want to get a head start, please try Firefox and let us know the results.

He didn’t say, but I assumed that he received it as an email. He was letting me know that the post came through with the captions in place, which was different than when he received it via the computer. Since he is used to receiving the posts by email I feel quite certain that he would not choose to go to the site and open the post. I will try Firefox

I have emailed my friend to verify how he read the correctly rendered post–am waiting to hear back. Meanwhile, I have checked the preview function again with the same result of “page not found.” I don’t what you mean by “try Firefox” How would I do that? I have made a number of clearing actions, eg browser extensions etc, in order to resolve this problem, none of which have made a difference

    Margaret

  • Hello Margaret,

It sounds like you’re doing all of the right troubleshooting there.

I don’t what you mean by “try Firefox”

Firefox is a different browser: https://www.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/new/

Testing across browsers can assist with narrowing issues down to specifics – for example, it would help to determine if there’s a problem with an internet connection.
