WordPress spam ads be changed to relevant ads?

WP is running disgusting, spammy ads on my blog resulting in a dramatic reduction of readership. None of the ads are even remotely related to my content. This is not what I expected when the ads were first announced. Is there a way to control ads so that they are relevant to my readership?

Ads on WordPress.com sites have never been relevant to the content on the site.
The ads your visitors see are based on factors like the location and browser history of those visitors, not on any aspect of your site’s content, and no two people visiting your site will see exactly the same ads. This applies to both ads shown on free sites, and paid sites participating in our WordAds program.
If you don’t want ads to show on your site, you can remove them by upgrading to any of our paid plans.
