WordPress System Outage

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello All – Does anyone know what is going on right now, this morning, with WordPress? I cannot get into editing, posting, even the contact and help pages are blank, I have screenshots. Is the whole system down? My site is visible, but un-editable.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

We haven’t had any outages and your site loads fine for me. I can get into your dashboard as well without any problems.

Are you able to access WP-Admin, here?

    https://toneshift.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

If you can access that link, but not the pages at My Sites, it would indicate a browser problem. Please clear the browser cache and make sure JavaScript is enabled in the browser. Also try disabling any browser add-ons you may have installed.

Also please try checking if you can access those pages using a different browser, or if possible, a different internet connection.

I spoke with a few folks from WordPress yesterday. I am able to now edit via Safari, however, I still get blank pages when trying to edit via FireFox, my browser of choice. All worked fine up until yesterday. I can reach WP-Admin, but not the normal editor and my stats and all. I have refreshed, de-cached, etc.

  • @toneshift what changed in Firefox? Is there any chance you have a new extension or setting that could be blocking our scripts? I’ve just updated Firefox here and can confirm it’s running properly on my mac.

On a page that seems blank, you can go to Tools > Web Developer > Web Console, then click around a bit to see if you can get any errors. The errors you get will likely give us more information about the issue, so paste them here.

    Thanks in advance!

Thanks, could you try temporarily disabling the Adblock Plus extension to see whether the site loads afterwards? If it does, that suggests it is blocking scripts needed to load the page.

I disabled AdBlock Plus and it made no difference on Firefox, and my system has been rebooted and new Mojave updates, and still no changes.

  • Hey there,

Did you happen to look into @supernovia’s suggestion of going to Tools > Web Developer > Web Console to check for errors? I am curious as to what potential errors you may have received – if you receive any, let us know what they are, and we can better look into the issue for you.

    Thanks!

I apologize for being a mere mortal. Other than using the simple interface that WordPress has laid out, going deeper into HTML, web developer gobblediegook, etc. does not interest me as an editor of content, I basically just want the product to work, but alas, I think your new update has truly bungled things for people who have been using the product for years, in my case, over eight!

    Hi toneshift,

We’re still happy to look into this for you. If you go to Tools > Web Developer > Web Console, refresh the page and make a screenshot of what you are seeing there, this may provide a clue as to what is happening. The screenshot can be uploaded to your Media Library.

These instructions didn’t lead me anywhere. When I go to WP Admin and then my Dashboard (https://toneshift.wordpress.com/wp-admin/) and then Tools (https://toneshift.wordpress.com/wp-admin/tools.php) — there is nothing listed as ‘Web Developer’ or ‘Web Console’.

  • @toneshift, clarifying a few things:

    – The errors you may see will likely be confusing. You don’t need to interpret them though. Just copy and paste them, or get a screenshot (which you can then upload via wordpress.com/media) then update us here so we know you have done that.

    – We’re referring to “Tools” in your Firefox menu, rather than a tools option on the site.

These steps may be easier, though:

    1. Open Firefox, and open your WordPress.com site. Navigate to a page that is blank.

    2. Press SHIFT ⌘ J (all at the same time). This will bring up a console. If it has any errors, copy and paste them here, or get screenshots.

    3. If it does not have errors, try refreshing the page (⌘ R) or clicking any available menu items on the WordPress.com site. Capture any errors you can see and send them our way.

    Thank you in advance.

I have a screenshot of errors but now where do I post the screenshot to you? This dialogue does not seem to offer that.

I added the screenshots to my Media (via Safari)

  • Thanks for your patience with us, and for working through stuff that feels pretty complex! This is tricky issue but I think we’re about to get to the bottom of it.

This error suggests there’s a problem with the local storage in Firefox, so we can try clearing out the definitely disposable stuff, as well as things related to WordPress. I’m hoping that will solve the issue.

Also, if you don’t mind leaving your add blocker off while we troubleshoot, that may help avoid complications as well.

First clear the cache and your cookies for WordPress.com. Here’s how:
    – Go to Firefox > Preferences > Privacy
    – Scroll down to find Cookies and Site Data.
    – Click “Clear Data”
    – Uncheck cookies; leave Cached Web Content checked. Click clear.
    – Click Manage Data
    – Search for WordPress
    – click Remove All Shown, click OK. Click OK again.

Next, we want to clear the local database. Use these steps:
    – go to WordPress.com (don’t worry about logging in yet)
    – Press alt ⌘ i all at once — another inspector window will appear at the bottom of your browser
    – Click on Storage
    – You’ll see a list on the left. Click Local Storage
    – Find anything that says WordPress in the list, option click, and choose to delete it

Then go ahead and log back into WordPress.com. This will force your local storage for WordPress to regenerate, so if that was corrupt, this should solve the problem.

If that does not solve the issue, please check about:addons

Click on Extensions and Plugins, and upload screenshots of those; we’ll try to see if there’s a conflict that way.

Also, go to Firefox > About and get a screen shot of your version information.

Thanks again for your patience! While you could just switch to Safari, I know how it feels to want to stick with your preferred browser. We’d love to help you get Firefox working again if we can.

  • Also, to clarify on the cache thing, you won’t be removing anything important. Cache just downloads copies of things to your browser so you don’t have to re-download them every time you visit a website.

It’s a good idea to clear that out now and then, and the quota error you saw there suggest that it might be helpful to do that now.

If you have any questions before proceeding, just let us know.

That was many steps to get this working again, but it seems to be up and running again. I have no idea what happened to make this occur, but it works.
