WordPress Update

Help! Yesterday, I initiated a WordPress software update on a site that I was given access to, and today it is showing a HTTP Error 500. I need to know if this is just the site being in maintenance mode while updating or if I’ve lost my site. I cannot contact human support regarding the site.
