WordPress updates gives an error

    Hello,

    First timer here.

I got an email about updates attempted on client’s website.

The following were about to update:
    WordPress Core
    1 theme
    3 plugins

    But they all failed.

It seems that Elementor, WordPress Core, 10Web Social Feed causes visual changes, gives a white screen if updated.

The website has been done some years ago. Could this be an issue?

How should I proceed? Thank you in advance.

Hello and welcome to the world of website management! Dealing with updates that result in issues like a white screen can be challenging, but it’s a common scenario, especially with older websites. Here’s how you can approach resolving this:

    1. Backup the Website:
    • Before attempting any changes, ensure you have a complete backup of your website. This includes the database and all files. If things go awry, you can revert to the current state.
    1. Check Compatibility:
    • The white screen issue often arises due to compatibility problems between WordPress Core, themes, and plugins.
    • Visit the WordPress.com plugin repository and theme directory to check the compatibility of your current versions of Elementor, 10Web Social Feed, and the theme with the latest WordPress version.
    1. Update in a Staging Environment:
    • If possible, create a staging environment – a clone of your live website where you can safely test updates without affecting the live site.
    • Update WordPress Core, the theme, and plugins one by one in the staging environment to isolate the cause of the issue.
    1. Troubleshoot the White Screen Issue:
    • If a white screen appears, deactivate all plugins and switch to a default WordPress theme (like Twenty Twenty-One) to see if the issue is resolved.
    • If the site works, reactivate plugins and the theme one by one to pinpoint the exact cause.
    • Check error logs for any specific error messages that can guide you to the root of the problem.
    1. Consider Updating the Theme or Plugins:
    • If your theme or any plugin is outdated and not compatible with the latest WordPress version, consider updating them or replacing them with alternatives that are actively maintained.
    1. Apply Updates on the Live Site:
    • Once you successfully update everything in the staging environment without issues, replicate the process on the live site.
    1. Regular Maintenance:
    • Regularly update your website to avoid such issues in the future. Consider setting up a maintenance plan to keep the website up to date.
