WordPress Upgrade: 404 Issues
-
Hi Team,
I had upgraded my blog (webproactive.wordpress.com) to my self-hosted blog (susanta.com).
Although domain name is redirecting now, but but most of post URLs in my old blog are getting 404 errors. Is there a way I can fix this so I can avail the SEO benefits?
They call you Happiness Engineers. So I hope you won’t let me down. :)
Thanks,
Sushant

Did you chnage the permalink structure on the self hosted site from being the same as what it is at WordPress.com? If you do that then you break all the links.
-
Hi Sushant,
In order for the Site Redirect to work reliably and correctly, you’ll need to change the permalinks to match WordPress.com permalinks. On your self-hosted site, navigate to Settings -> Permalink and change the permalink structure to Day and Name (http://example.com/2014/06/17/sample-post/). The links should begin working correctly then!

Hi Jeremey. I have the same issue but I even have the option ‘permalinks’, Who I can contact to help me in?? This issue is been more than two months without any solution.

Guys, I have found a solution to my problem. So I would like to share it with you here.
On Google Webmaster Tools, I got a lot of links showing 404 errors. One of them was the following links:
http://webproactive.wordpress.com/2010/11/28/5-ways-to-figure-if-you%E2%80%99re-an-internet-addict/
I shared this issue with my WordPress developer who recommended the following fix:
Prior to this fix, the above link was point to a 404 error showing this page.
My friend told me to 301 redirect the second URL to the current page of my website.
So using a 301 redirect plugin, I 301 redirect all my outdated URLs to their respective current URLs.
Now they are working fine. Should Webmaster Tools show any other links in future, I will fix it the same way.
Hope this helps.
Thanks,

@Sushant – That’s definitely another option. I’m glad you found something that works!
@aussieinparis – I don’t see a redirect upgrade on your account. Can you let me know what site you’re redirecting and where you’re redirecting it to?

Hi Georgie,
The issue here is that your domain (aparisdiary.com) is not pointed to your WordPress.com blog. It’s pointed elsewhere. The name servers are as follows:
dns1.stabletransit.com dns2.stabletransit.comDid you set this up as a self-hosted blog?
You’re currently publishing the posts to aussieinparis.wordpress.com. However, when you visit that page, you’re automatically redirected to your mapped domain aparisdiary.com, which is a self-hosted site it looks like. As a result, you would need to add those posts directly to the self-hosted site via the log-in here:
http://aparisdiary.com/wp-admin
Alternatively, you could change the name servers on your domain to point back to WordPress.com. In that case, you would just need to add the posts as you are now at aussieinparis.wordpress.com. To point your domain back to WordPress.com, please change your name servers as described here:

Hi Jeremey,
Thanks so much for your correspondence.= )
Yes, my blog is self hosted (with Laughing Squid).
So I logged onto -http://aparisdiary.com/wp-admin
And all the menu options to post blogs, is missing.
All I have there is ‘Dashboard’ which gives update on WP news and the WP blog. I have ‘profile’ which shows my account name etc.Do i need to download the new version of work press 3.9.1? Is this why everything is missing? at the top of the screen, I have reminder to download the 3.9.1…
Once i have the interface, where I can actually access blogs and pubish them, i have no problem to transfer the data over.
If I give you logins, can you help me with this?
Thanks kindly for you help,
George -
We cannot assist with WordPress.ORG software. You need to be at their forums for help with that version of the software.

Hi George,
Unfortunately, as Raincoaster mentioned, this forum is for WordPress.com-hosted blogs so I’m limited in how much I can help. It sounds like the issue is your user role. If you’re set to a role lower than administrator, you’ll be missing many of the options on the Dashboard. You can read more about user roles here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/
Is there another user on the blog that is set as the owner perhaps leaving you as an author user role?
Also, just a note of precaution, please do not post your login credentials in the forum!
