wordpress url changes to custom url in address bar but displays ad site
-
A blog I like to visit changed from a custom url to a wordpress url (from anothersidequest.com to anothersidequest.wordpress.com). At first the URL would redirect from the wordpress URL back to the custom URL but would at least show the blog in question. However now no matter which URL I visit, the address bar shows the custom URL (anothersidequest.com) and displays a car insurance ad site (always the same one).
Fearing a virus or suspecting a cookie issue, I tried my computer at work which has never been to any wordpress site, is on a different network (of course) and even a different ISP, and has a professional IT service monitoring the network and all the computers against viruses/malware/etc.. That computer does the same thing: URL back to the custom URL but showing a car insurance ad site.
Any ideas?

anothersidequest.wordpress.com points to a WordPress.com site when I view it. Perhaps the site owner got this figured out?

That’s just it: for me it redirects to the vanity URL, both on my laptop which I normally use to do, well, everything, and when I tried it on my work PC which is, of course, on a separate network and ISP, as well as being protected by a professional IT/security company. But it seems to work for other people. Makes me wonder if it’s somehow just me. :P

did you use the vanity URL or the .wordpress.com URL?
The owner dropped the vanity URL in January due to the costs involved but still owns/uses the blog using the generic .wordpress.com URL. I can see the ad coming up for the no longer used vanity URL, but the .wordpress.com URL, for me, redirects to the vanity URL and the ad no matter which computer I try to use, but seems to work fine for others except, apparently, you.

I’m really not sure what to say here, there shouldn’t be anyone being sent to anothersidequest.com if they are visiting http://anothersidequest.wordpress.com/.

I continue to not be able to replicate the issue.
Raincoaster, I’m curious if you got the anothersidequest.com when you went to http://anothersidequest.wordpress.com/ or if you were just checking out where the old URL now goes.

FWIW I get the cheap insurance spam add only when I use the domain URL anothersidequest.com. I do not get it when I use the http://anothersidequest.wordpress.com/ URL. -

Hi there,
It’s good to know you fished my comment out of the spam filter. This is an example that clearly points out why purchasing a domain for only a short time is a very bad idea. -
